Last night I attended attended a Utah DWR Regional Council Meeting. One of the main issues of the meeting was the bison herd of the Henry Mountains. This herd is one of only four genetically pure and disease free herds in the world.
To enhance hunting opportunities and viewing recreation, it has been proposed to start a herd in the Book Cliffs as well as grow the current Henry Mountain herd from 275 to 350 adult bison. Since the Henry's are primarily BLM ground there must be balance maintained here for livestock and bison coexistence. There is talk that wild bison may be put on the endangered species list. These actions will certainly help prevent such a drastic measure.
Thanks to Sportsman For Habitat the Henry's can now support more bison. Sportsman For Habitat has just purchased 150 AUMs. An AUM is an area that can support one bison or a bison and calf for a year. Instead of going to cattle this land will now go to bison range. Sportsmen For Habitat also has the money in the bank for an additional 150 AUMS which would make it possible to have enough land to support 430+ adult bison in the area. 430 is them magic number to achieve extreme healthy status for a herd. Their just waiting for a commitment from the DWR.
I think this is great, a new herd for the Book Cliffs, and more bison for the Henry herd. What a wonderful group Sportsman For Habitat is for putting their money towards wildlife, instead of funding special interests, stupid federal government lobbyists, and legislation. These actions produce results so that everyone, all types of recreationists can enjoy wild Utah.

I spend a lot of time canyoneering in the Henrys but have yet to see a titanka running wild. We are usually hanging around the base of Hillers and Ellen, anyone know where bouts do the Buffalo roam aroand the Henrys??
