Every year it seems to be the same story. I put my kids to be around 9:30 and I hit the sack around 10:00. At 11:30 or later, the neighbors are still lighting off fireworks and I

When you run out of beer or thumbs. Whichever comes first.

I'd just call the cops. That's after hours (10pm). Are you in a town at least?

Yup....they are violating the noise ordinance. You could call the cops....if you wanna be on bad terms with your neighbor....

OR

You could go over and offer them a beer, stand there and watch their lame fireworks for about 5 minutes, and then politely say something like "Well guys, I gotta run. Could you guys do me a favor? I'd really appreciate it if you guys could keep it down out here. My wife has a splitting headache, and we're trying to get our kids into bed....thanks."

After that, if they still carry on for a while then call the cops.

FYI - the cops don't have to tell them who called. Be anonymous. Just give them the rough address of where to go check on the fireworks.

Unless of course you're the only two homes on the street!

i have to agree with rock here. there is no sense in calling the cops until it's a problem. it's best to try to resolve it first with the neighbors. how many times you try to resolve it before calling the cops is up to you.

I'd go watch them, and then say, "See you guys, I've gotta hit the sack. I've got an early morning." That should drop the hint.

OR

Go and watch them, have your wife call the cops, then you won't be a suspect. :2thumbs:

I also agree, if you call the cops than there is a possibility of retaliation. All though if it persists you might not have any choice. I have had to approach neighbors for being to loud and they were way cool about it. Most of the time they don't realize their being so loud. :2thumbs:

I hate calling the cops about anything. The only time I've done it was when I could hear my neighbor two houses away beating the $hit out of their kid. I have no tolerance for that.

I try to be neighborly, but I just dread firework season.

Why must my hillbilly neighbors insist on burning money on lame fireworks and light them off well into the night?

Hell bubba.... I didn't know you lived near me!!!!

Stop on by for a beer and some fireworks.

You know, I worked with the Military Police for 10 months. We used to get calls about people's dogs barking. The first question I asked them was if they went and talked to the neighbors about it first. 90% of the time the answer was no. If you would just politely go ask them to knock it off, it would fix the majority of the problems. If they tell you where to go...then call the cops.

I don't know about talking to them first. I mean, isn't this stuff common sense? Your dog is barking in the middle of the night, go out and shut it the hell up. Or your lighting fireworks at all hours of the night. I don't mind on the night of the holiday, but not that whole week. My take is if they don't have common sense in the first place, then you may be shooting yourself in the foot by talking to them first. If you go talk to them first and they do nothing and then you call the cops. Well, then I guess the anonymous thing goes out the window.

I have no problem confronting people, but I agree with Accadacca, this should be a common sense thing. Why is it that some people just don't give a shit about others?

I can always be overly neighborly and start mowing their lawn at 5:30 in the morning.

We'll see what this year brings.

Don't know about the lawn mowing idea... newer mowers are way too quite. But 6:00am is one of the best time to remove your dirtbike baffles and blow the carbon out.... Some times it just takes longer than others....

I was just gonna mention this. If you wanna fight back, fight fire with fire. Nothing pisses off an all night party-goer who is trying to sleep in like obnoxiously noud noises very, very early in the morning. Tillers work great for this, as well as chainsaws, and circular saws. Just cut up a bunch of random wood for no reason as close to their house as possible. And drag it out for a good long time.

You could add obnoxiously loud music from your car stereo for good measure as well.

there obviously can be more cases than i describe here, but ...

some people just need the confrontation to realize it more clearly. if they are told face to face, then they start thinking about it more and start to think of you more as their neighbor that they care, at least, a little about. i don't know how well you know your neighbors, but i believe in today's world where our neighbors are less well-known, that these types of inconsiderate acts occur more frequently. i agree they should be considerate regardless in the first place, but ...

in another case, they could be thinking to themselves, ahhh, it's just 2 weeks of the year. we're quiet the rest of the time ... THEY won't mind. of course it'd be a lot better if they asked before if it bothers folks, and they would have found out that it does.

these of course are on the optimistic side. it could plainly be that they don't care. it could also be that they like the fact that they're making noise at all hours. or many other things ...

most people just don't really know their neighbors that well, and so this game theory scenario starts to envelop about the best course of action.

I like that idea! I'll add, just twist the muffler off so that puppy is NASCAR loud. Start at pre-dawn. Then set your speakers in the windows and crank Ethel Merman recordings. Then get a burn barrell and set a bunch of plastic milk cartons on fire.

Sounds like you live in a similar town to me. We have a godawful white trash problem -- open-air domestic violence, reckless fast driving down small neighborhood streets, cock fighting (yep). I've been here 2 years now after spending over 20 years in the woods, and I am fu*king OVER town life. Done with it.

You guys sound like a bunch of grumpy old men!!!!

The only time I get angry with my neighbors for drinking beer and igniting fireworks is if I'm not invited.

I don't have a problem with peopel lighting fireworks or drinking beer or playing music or even being stupid, as long as it isn't at 11:30 at night. I'll be right there with you up until around 10:00 and then I'm done.

I just find it inconsiderate when they stop caring about others. Partying late is fine, I just don't want to hear it. Just like you don't want to hear me blaring my tunes, chainsaw, jackhammer or fireworks at 6:00am.

Well I do have a problem with confrontation. I'd call the cops IF IT PERSISTS. I can forgive one or two times, but when it's repeated it not my job to get them to comply with ordinances since the do lack common sense already.

Sunday night we were over to a friends house and the neighbor invited us all over for the firework show he was about to put on. This was at 9:15, still pretty light outside but he didn't want to do it too late to be curteous. Well, about 9:30 some nut flies up in his truck and runs over the launching tubes and spent fireworks. Then procedes to scream at the 20 or so people that he's calling the cops because he so sick of us waking him up. Luckily the neighbor is one of the nicest people I've ever met and just apologized for waking him up and told him to have a nice night. The guy is extremely lucky he pulled this sh!t on a nice crowd. If any alcohol was involved, it could have made for one interesting night.

I'd have told him to go fawk himself in the ear with an icepick.

I think 10:00 is the average "quiet" time. 11:00 on weekends and holidays.

Not to be a killjoy, but technically, fireworks are only legal +/- 3 days of the 4th of July, 24th of July, New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year in Utah (minus city/county days, etc.), IIRC. Good thing nobody did call the cops. ;-)

I'd suggest to do nothing and accept that this one night you wont get the best night of your sleep.

If you have an issue after that knife his tires and you can call it even.

Is it possible that fireworks at 11:30 is his way of retaliating for something you did? If you are sure it isn't, ask him politely not to do it anymore. Retaliation is the wrong way to go, especially when dealing with an idiot.

No sh!t, sherlock. We were fully aware they were illegal which is why he was so nice to the guy.

We love fireworks...Ive had the cops called on me, lighting them in the neighborhood (my neighbors suck wind) just fountains and such - nothing major, except for the one mortar shell :ne_nau: - no I dea who called, and it's illegal within city limits. Needless to day I dont do that anymore. We go out of town ...about 1/2 mile...and light em off before it gets really dark & then head for home to lay on the lawn & watch the city show. You can buy some really good crap here in wyo :2thumbs:
