A law enforcement official close to the investigation says pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room.

Speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, the official also says authorities are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths.

The family was found dead Monday, and authorities were investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide. Investigators believe the 40-year-old Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, 47, and son, Daniel, 7, over the weekend, then himself on Monday.

Now for my opinion; I can't believe they gave this guy a three hour tribute, as if he is a hero. The WWE should have condemned this act, and I hope it reflects on them badly for not doing so. I bet this had something to do with steroid use.

Couple of thoughts: First, how can anything (even this) make the WWF look worse than it is? This only reinforces the well-deserved stereotype.

Second, what sort of woman would be stupid enough to marry trash like this? Not that it matters -- but it was selfish of them to breed.

All said, looks like the gene pool got a little cleaner through this incident.

The tribute began with WWE chairman Vince McMahon standing in the middle of an empty ring, eyes welling up with tears and voice cracking as he broke the news of Benoit

This is sad I don't understand what would cause you to Kill your family & then commit suicide. I am also sure this had to do with drugs they can do funky shit with your mind.

Chris Benoit was a great wrestler in the top of his game. This just don't make sense why he did this. He will be missed in the Wrestling Entertainment industry.

My wife, whom has never................. ever stopped the remote on Pro Wrestling channels, just happened to stop for a few seconds on this just as they were starting to show it, and we thought to ourselves, this guy must have died....................... only to find out this morning what the circumstances were and COULD NOT BELIEVE they did that last night.
