Men Busted For Taking Gun Into Utah Movie Theater

Kathryn May
Reporting

(KUTV) AMERICAN FORK - Two men were arrested in American Fork on Friday after allegedly packing a handgun into a movie theater, where families were in attendance.

Suspicious employees at the Cinemark theaters in American Fork called authorities after three suspects were reportedly seen packing a 9mm handgun into a backpack. Police approached the suspects and searched the backpack, but no gun was found and the three were allowed to go into the theater.

However, the theater manager did not want the three suspects in his business. Officials found them sitting in the back of a theater and escorted them out. Following the movie in that particular theater, cleaning crews found a handgun underneath a seat where the suspects had been sitting.

Matthew Sommers and Timothy Pitcher, both 19, were later tracked down and charged with obstruction of justice and reckless endangerment. A female juvenile who was with the men was not charged.

Sommers faces additional charges because police believe he possessed the handgun even though he is on probation in connection with a kidnapping case in New Mexico.

According to court documents, Sommers told police that he committed murder at age 12, that he sells approximately $20,000 in illegal methamphetamine per month and that he started a street gang in New Mexico. However, authorities are trying to determine if any of his statements are true.

Pitcher also has a criminal background, according to police. Both men were being held in jail on cash-only bonds.

It was not immediately clear why Sommers allegedly took the handgun into the movie theater.
