Volunteers retrieve injured Bountiful 17-year-old

LAYTON -- Just hours after finishing a rescue Monday night in Farmington Canyon, Davis County Search and Rescue and Layton Fire Department headed up Adams Canyon to rescue an injured 17-year-old hiker.

The Bountiful teen was up the canyon about 2 miles, near the second waterfall, said Davis County Sheriff's Lt. Brad Wilcox.

The teen and his hiking partners were able to call for help using a cell phone. They reported the teen fell 30 feet, and had back and head injuries.

When rescuers arrived, they determined the fall was closer to 10 feet, but, "he's still in a condition that he couldn't have walked out on his own," Wilcox said.

"His dad said it was the first time he'd been that far up," Wilcox said. "He sustained some wrist injuries, head lacerations and is complaining of severe back pain."

Rescuers put the teen on a stretcher mounted on a single mountain bike wheel and walked him down the trail.

"They tried to use a helicopter to lift him out of there, but because of the wind they were unsuccessful," Wilcox said.

The volunteer search team had only hours to sleep after a search in Farmington Canyon that began Monday night and continued into Tuesday morning until about 3 a.m.

"They're all volunteers. They all eat, sleep and drink this rescue," Wilcox said. "We support them any way we can, but all their hours and their time is volunteer. ... They're more than happy to do it."

Wilcox said it's unclear what caused the teen's fall.

"It's hard to say, I wasn't there. It's just one of those things," he said. "You need to be very careful in the backcountry."

10 feet is enough to do some serious damage (voice of experience).
