Here's what happened. I was in Salina, and near the on-ramp for I-70, there is a large painted statue of Black Hawk, the Ute chief whose band caused some trouble for the early pioneers of central Utah. Anyway, I saw this statue of Black Hawk with an upraised tomahawk and thought it would be cool to get my picture taken standing on the pedestal with him. So I told my wife to get out there with the camera while I climbed up. Well, his left hand is hanging down (I'm on his left side), and has a small protrusion from it, about the size and width of a dime and as I climb up, I bang my head hard on this, because I didn't see it at first. Wow, my head hurts, I thought to myself. Anyway, about the time I'm standing upright, the blood starts pouring down my forehead. "Hurry and take the picture, before I have to jump down and stop this bleeding," I tell my wife. So I wipe the blood off my head, but before she can take a shot, my forehead is bathed in blood again. Now, with my forehead smeared and my hand covered in blood, she takes the shot. I jump down and get back to the car, apply pressure to my head, and my wife joins me. By this time, we're both laughing our heads off at the irony of being the victim of someone whose been dead for more than a century.

I'll post it when I get home from work tonight sometime---though you can't really see the blood 'cause my wife had to stand way back to get the entire statue in the picture.

1865 - Brigham Young told his followers, "Seek out the murdering Indians and slay them... do your duty and say nothing to any man."

Yeah, I guess Black Hawk might still be feeling a little peevish.

Plus, look where your right hand was! Were you going for his figs?

That's gotta be true.

Except for the part where he told mormons to settle with them to become friends.

I threw that quote in there just for kicks, but always had the impression the Mormons tried a little harder than the rest of the white setters to establish good relations with the Indians.

I checked out this website -- http://blackhawkwarutah.com/ -- and it brought up some interesting perspectives. Does anyone have a suggestion for some good reading on the Mormon/Indian history? I do a lot of reading in that realm.
