Ok, who here wears knee pads? If you do what type do you wear, likes/dislikes? I have thought about knee pads because I hate wearing pants/levi's and I would like knee protection. I have knee pads for paintball that I think would be perfect, but they are a little pricey to trash in canyons.

I don't wear kneepads in canyons, but occasionally in caves. There's a local lady that makes custom knee pads for $45 that look really good. We're going to try them out this weekend I'll let you know how we like them. They're supposed to be much more comfortable to walk around in, and cover more than just your knee (the go from your thigh down to your shin).

Unless you are doing the really skinny stuff, you do not need them. Also, unless you are doing the canyons day after day after day after day after day.....you probably don't need them.

dont listen to these macho fools... :nono:

there's nothing wrong w/ knee pads

i'm a big fan of the McDavids (http://www.sportsdepot.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=403) brand neoprene pads.
they have knee and elbow pads
single layer or double

i like to wear the double layer knee pads inside out (less wear on the stitching)
i have skinny boney knees, and after a serious knee surgery, i welcome knee pads like a cool drink on a hot summers day :2thumbs:

My fave knee pads are unavailable - some protos TJ Hooker made up and are now trashed :-( . The ones Mark linked look very similar - will try those. I've also worn the Asics wrestling pads (http://www.weplay.com/Asics/wrestling/knee/pads/gel-reversible.html) - very nice, just don't buy 'em too large!

Yea don't listen to the "tough guys." If you are doing more than a weekend trip (which remember are Shane's specialty) then knee and elbow pads are invaluable. I did a 6 day trip down in Escalante a couple weeks ago and would have had to leave after 3 days because of bloody knees if I didn't use pads. The asics pads Hank mentioned rock, they handled probably close to 40 canyons, including a fair amount of skinny north wash type stuff before they finally ripped apart enough to justify buying new ones. They are a little pricey at $18 a piece, but they last much longer than any other pads I've seen.

Thanks marc and hank, that is what I was thinking of.
The thought of knee pads came up as we were scrambling in Blue John. That sandstone rips stuff up. In a place like Zion I probably wouldn't wear them.

Yah, they're 'specially good on upclimbs...i found 'em essential for ascent of Hog1

Hmmmm..... and now back to our regularly scheduled topic, I too have used the Asics wrestling knee pads in the North Wash and Roost. I will take one in Zion next week 'cause my left knee is a bit messed up and tender to the touch on a spot or two. The price on the Asics is not too expensive and they are great with shorts. Just slid them down around your shins as shin guards when you are not scraping your way through canyons.

different techniques for different freaks

as your ability level improves the constant need decreases. but it always nice to have them when sliding down that rock with those little nubs that stick out and can tear you apart.

as for Tanya's comment..... :lol8:
