even though i have issues with backpacker magazine and stopped looking at it in 1997
i'd agree that the recognition in such a high-profile mag is pretty cool

Backpacker is the only outdoor rag I take and the only outdoor rag that ever has anything even remotely useful in it.... I'd be curious to know what they did 10 years ago that still causes you to boycott?

And FWIW: the short piece was written by a friend of Scott's, so I'm guessing that Scott might be able to get him to post it here without any copyright infringements? Copyright often remains with the author.

If you see a copyright (author's name) in the byline, then that's the case. However, most periodicals own the copyright to works written by their hired writers, including staff and stringers.

What's weird is they took my article and Jeff's trip report and according to Jeff: The short article they put in the magazine is a hybrid of my trip report, your article on the discovery etc. all woven into a first person narrative...kinda weird how they did that

Also weird is that they emailed me asking if they could use my photos and said they were using Jeff's trip report. I didn't know the article was already in Backpacker until someone started a post on it on Summitpost.

Unfortunately, I can't buy the magazine in town so haven't read it. I'll have to buy it when passing through Grand Junction next week. Dang, they should have sent me a free copy.

Anyway, National Geographic Adventure contacted me after seeing the info on Summitpost and NABS. Supposedly they are putting something in the July ot August issue about the arch (they are doing an article on arches in general), but not sure how much. Not sure how much will be in there about this specific arch, though they did ask me a lot of questions. The article is on arches in general and on the Natural Bridge and Arch Society.

Very cool. I just got back from a week long business trip, and I saw the latest Backpacker issue in the mail pile. Looking forward to reading it.
