Going down to Escalante next weekend

We are planning on hiking the peekaboo/spooky gulch loop with our 7 year old son. Has anyone else been down there this year yet? Any tips? We aren't going to do the long loop, just the shorter one.

It should be pretty hot down there, bring plenty of water, really I would bring some Power Ade or Gator Ade. Have fun.

I was in the area tues-thurs this week. Its pretty hot in the benches but the shade in Coyote and side canyons is really nice. I'd recommend drinking a ton of water before you leave, and then taking at least 3 quarts per person (or a filter to refill) if you're going to be out all day. To avoid the worst heat get a pre-8 oclock start hiking in, then play around in the shade of the canyons until 5:30 or later before hiking back to your car. There are no-seeums on the benches during the heat of the day and a few mosquitos and deerflies down in the canyons but not bad at all. I didn't get more than a couple bites.
