from what i can tell its in the havajo nation area based on it being a keyword and that he calls it "big res" on the title.
there is another part 2 which he does another canyon and it he stops, like on this one cause you need ropes
it sure looks purdy and im navajo land is half as close as the roost.
thanks

i can't tell which is "slot canyon exploring 1."
i know "slot canyon exploring 2" is kaibeto creek ... and he's poaching (illegally entering) this canyon, as it has been permanently closed.
i found these videos when he first posted them. while he tries to mask the names on the second one, you can tell from the way his mouth moves and the reference to a nearby town ... there is only one such slot canyon and it goes by the name of the town ... then, stupidly or purposefully at the end of the video, i realized he doesn't bleep the name.
i emailed him to tell him that it is problematic that he has the name in the video as it is closed, and, should people enter, it can jeopordize future access to the canyon ... naturally i got no reply.

..... There are several legal ways of descending these canyons but they all involve jumping through multiple hoops.
Yes, I was given a name of someone who can possibly get legal permission with some hoops. The question is if it is worth it or not.
Are this canyons that much better than the legal ones that require no red tape that it makes it worth it? Can't say since I haven't done them (an will not illegally).
If anyone has been there, would they care to comment?

I've done Butterfly and Pinion. Both are nice canyons but there are a lot of other canyons just as good or better. Both canyons really just blend into all the other canyons on the big pool. I really wouldn't worry about doing these canyons until you run out of other nice options. If you happen into a deal where you get the opportunity to do the routes legally then go for it. Over the last 4 or 5 years I've seen several opportunities for experienced canyoneers to do the routes. Probably the main attraction to doing these canyons is they are not open to the general public, so you can do a little chest thumping if you get a chance to descend the routes.
FWIW: MK's driving directions to Pinion are no longer valid. The MK route has been fenced off.
Warning: It's not uncommon for whitey's car to suffer vandalism on the res and expect anything not nailed down to be stolen. YMMV.

thanks
i noticed he left the name at the end of the one video, the reason these are most interesting is they are far less driving distance for me than the roost and other areas.
where he stops at the end of video 2 reminds me of the grim crawl area of shenanigans, getting me rather confused. :)
i see these were created in 2002 so maybe he was not illegal back then?

Anyone told MK? If not, I can pass along the info (or you can).
Personally I don't think the canyons should be in the books until opened. The above might be another good reason to exclude them.

The canyons have been closed since 1994 or 1995.

i just checked my notes ... april, 1996 is when they voted and closed the canyons.
christmas eve 1997 is when the rescue of the group in the snowstorm was initiated ... supposedly ending any discussion of reopening.

I've never really heard the history of the closer or rescue. You have any more details?

For academic/historical purposes only. It would have had to be 1994 or 1995 for Kaibito and Starting Water, though it could be different for the rest. The reason I know this is because as requested, MK had to come up with a printed disclaimer in the 3rd edition of the canyon guide after it was already sent to the printers. The book was off the presses in 1995, meaning it had to be before then. The disclaimer was in the form of a blue postcard that MK had to tape in front of every book. The book hit the stores in 1995 meanging at least those canyons were already closed by then.
Perhaps they had another vote in 1996. :ne_nau:

There were three rescues out of upper Kaibito in 1993 and 1994. The one in 1994 was on New Years. I'll check my info and let you know, but give me until tomorrow.

I was just looking at MK's Tech guide. Interesting that MK does not put dates for his descents of the Navajo Canyons in "author experience", he usually includes them.
