As of yesterday, May 4, 2007, Behunin had changed its character. No the large rappels have not disappeared but the recent rains have created two large swimming holes. The rappel (#6) from the dead log into the 10 foot pool has now increased to 60 feet. And the pool beyond but before #7 has increased to about 40 feet.

Also the narrow places were very full and made for some difficult but fun stemming areas.

Here are two photos.

And also I read that you could climb around or stem above most of the water! Can't be fun for Shane if it's possible to avoid the water! Now...if someone went and pulled him into the water, it might be fun a little bit! :roflol:

Both times I have done Behunin it was early spring and the canyon was flowing water about 3 to 5 cfs. We always had 4 to 5 feet of snow climbing up to the final pass.

I can only imagine what a hot and hideous dust bowl that route would be in mid-summer.

A group of us just did this canyon Saturday (5/5). We stemmed a couple of small sections but never did get our feet wet. Rap #6 got the first one down wet, but he pulled the rest of us across.

Yup, that is what we did. My partner actually was able to create a large swing and avoid the water except for half his foot hitting the water's edge. He then provided impetus for me to land in the sand, though I didn't stick the landing.

Ah, I know which one you're talking about. We were 9 strong and half went ahead and started that rappel while the other half walked above and around it. Instead of going to the edge and doing the rap, we took the trail that goes up the sandy hill and around. I walked back UP the canyon just in time for to meet the first guy coming down the rap into the water. I just pulled him over to me as the rope bag was already on the sand.

Since I didn't count that as a rappel, #6 for us (of 8 total) was the one that you could either hit the anchor at the top of the waterfall, or use the ones on the pine trees further to the left. If you took the one off the rock, it put you right in the drink. We just improvised. :2thumbs:

This is the perfect canyon to get back into the canyon mode for the year. Behunin rules!

I know the two-stage rap LOOKS like it goes into the drink, but it is entirely possible to avoid getting even your feet wet with good rap technique and a little thin-face climbing.

Given that challenge, maybe Shane will like it now?
