Last year it was still a keeper. I was able to get out solo by just using one of the logs that was floating in the pothole as a step. It was also relatively easy for a partner assist with two people. The lip doesn't lend well to a pack toss, as there was a lot of sand, downward sloping. However, that was before the October storms, so it could have drastically changed. Depending on when you are going; I'll have more beta within a month. I'm heading out that way for Memorial Weekend...

Does anyone know if the keeper in Neon canyon is in "keeper mode" or not?
are you a member of the Canyons Yahoo Group? this is an excellent resource when seeking current information.

two recent posts (early april) referencing neon on Canyons are
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canyons/message/36501

you can follow up there for more details too, if you don't get information here.
i went through last october, but at that point neon was flowing and the pothole full of water.

Thanks for the info. I'll join that group. We will be doing Neon the first week of July. There will be 4 of us.
That's not a good time to do Neon, expect 100 plus degrees, it's also in the mansoon season. Very Very hot that time of year, and no shade to help out, and a long way back to the trailhead, have fun, good luck.

I went through Neon April 29. The keeper is in full keeper mode. With four people you can boost eachother out. With your rope you can make a foot loop to help the last person get out.
We will be doing Neon the first week of July. There will be 4 of us.
I went to Escalante in July 2005 to go through Egypt 3. On the exit hike out in the afternoon the temps were in triple digits. We were lucky and halfway through our exit hike clouds came in and lightly rained on us. Otherwise I am sure at least one member of my group would have had heat stroke. We should have just hung out in the shade until the clouds or cooler evening temps came.
I will not make the mistake of going to Escalante in July again.
I would strongly urge you to reconsider doing Neon in July. The approach/exit hike will take from 2-3 hours in full exposure to the sun. Have you or anyone in your group been to escalante in July? If no-one has I would submit you don't know what you are getting yourself into. If you do come out in July plan to hike in early in the morning and hang out in a shady spot until evening to hike out. I understand ringtail canyon is nearby, that might be worth checking out when you are done with Neon. I haven't been to ringtail though.

I will not make the mistake of going to Escalante in July again unless I will be spending the entire hot part of the day in a shady slot.
The typical Neon route is not long enough for you to spend the entire hot part of the day in the slot. At least not in July. I would stronly urge you to reconsider going to Escalante in July if you have not already been there, or to plan your days well so that you are not exposed to the sun in the afternoon.

What was the water level like in the rest of the canyon? we are planning on doing choprock on 5-7 if weather permits

it's also in the mansoon season
Typically the monsoon starts in mid-July and the driest part of the year in Escalante is actually usually June and early July. On the other hand, you are right that it is very, very hot.

There were a couple of long cold swims in the grim section. Based on the Tom's description I would guess the water was a medium capacity but I don't know for certain.
