My son wants to become a doctor. One question we have is in particular at the U of U, do they want your four year degree to be in a medically related field or whatever you want? I've heard some colleges like you to major in something non-medical because they favor diversity, but then I read an old web page that stated the U would like you to do some kind of medically related field. So does anyone here have experience or know someone who does? Also if you can think of anything else important, please let me know.

I know a few people who have applied to the U. One had a BS in Respiratory Therapy and another had a BS in English, neither got in but both had equal chances. Tell him to go talk to someone at the school, I had questions about their PA program and the counselor over it was EXTREMELY helpful, answered all my questions, and was real easy to get into her office to talk.
Eric.

That's good advice, Eric. We're actually trying to register for my son because he's still on his LDS mission in Peru, and will be until August. Since he's in a hurry to get going when he returns, he wants us to get him registered for fall semester prior to the time he gets back.
You can still go talk to the counselor. I did the same thing at the U and they helped me a great deal. Just call the Counselor's office and schedule an appt.
Good luck

They actually have a counseling group directed at the pre-med students - help them set schedules and cirriculum from Freshman through med school enrollment. My son met with them a couple of weeks ago. They went through the things that different medical schools across the country are looking for in an applicant. They noted that their own application for med school is as stringent as any in the country - if you focus on being prepared for their application you should be alright with most other institutions.
How much college has you son had? Tell him to relax on the pre-med thought until he gets home and analyzes where he currently is and where he needs to go. My son has enough credits to start at the U as a Junior - they recommenede that he take his time - rack up some research time, extra cirricular activities, etc... that will help his med-school application - rather than finish in 2 years they recommended 3+. Everyone he has met up there - and us as parents have also been involved with - has been great to work with!

He took some classes at SLCC, plus, some of his high school classes were concurrent enrollment classes at SLCC. It looks like all those credits transferred over just fine. I'm not sure how many hours in total he's completed, but I'd guess he's a sophomore. My daughter would know more on this as she's been doing most of the legwork to get his application for transferring in and all that.
