View Full Version : Ray's Tavern

So, we've heard a lot of things about Ray's Tavern. Some are "best hamburgers in the world", etc.

We went there and it seemed like plain old bugers and food to me. It was good, but didn't seem like anything special. Just like Red Robin or something.

So what was supposed to be the big deal? Or did we miss something?

The big deal about ray's is mostly that it's there. And the fries - best in Utah...

Their burgers and steaks are good, but not PHENOMENAL. I think it has more to do with people being surprised that even marginally good food could be found in lowly Green River. There are definitely better burgers to be found elsewhere.

Another thing---once you are famished by a long day of hiking and canyoneering, any food's flavor is enhanced beyond what it might normally be if you weren't starving and full of nothing but Gatorade and beef jerky.

It's sentimental, tradition, locally owned and operated, and pretty dang good food. I find it nothing like Red Robin. Groggs screws me over about every time I go there, but I keep going back.

and don't be mean to Ray's.

I have to get the photos up, too lazy right now to drag the laptop out of the big Dooge :haha: We had a flat on the eastern side of Colorado. The tranny went (which was brand new) just as we entered Illinois. Wrecker picked up the Toter and we were heading to Kentucky, so a nice neighbor of my buddy's drove out to get us and the trailer and brought us the 300 some miles to the spot in Kentucky :haha:

I think it became more of a tradition now to stop there for the River Rats and canyoneers. It's a central location before the split between Moab and San Rafeal and a very common place to find big names after a long trip.

Plus the fries!

Blasphemy is right. Ray's is a great way to top off a great day in the Roost or Swell. Not so formal that you feel uncomfortable going there a little dirty but I really like the food. I of course wash it down with a little Dew....

Ben's (the mex cafe) near Ray's is good. Avoid the Tamerisk (Take-a-risk) resturant at all costs.

Hiked several small canyons in the San Rafael Reef this morning, then stopped in at Ray's for lunch. Maybe not the "best" burger I ever had, but it was good (and good sized). Had a biker crowd there today. One big table of mountain bikers, one big table of Harley bikers. One table quiet, one table rowdy. I'll let you guess which was which. Also at at Ben's a couple nights ago, it was OK. I think I've done the entire culinary experience here in Green River.

I was at Ray's on Saturday night and the burgers are great. The were out of steak and baked potatoes. Sounded like a group of 30 had just left before we got there. After Not Mindbender and Zero Gravity. It was the best burger in the world. That place was really hoppin' Saturday night. We got there about 9 pm. I did mention that there was a lot of chatter on two web sites about Rays which was amusing to the waiter. We put Scott Pattersons name on the Bathroom wall. (JK :haha: )

Ray's :2thumbs: It's the only place to stop on the way back from The Swell. Those fries are awesome. Order a milk shake and your waitress will run to the milk shake place down the street and get one for you. That's service.

Moab Diner is just okay. That's where I go when I've got a bunch of college kids with me who can't afford anything better. It's not my first choice, but it beats fast food. The Broken Oar is just okay too. Same with Eddie Mc Stiff's and The Moab Brewery. Some will call this blashemy, but I didn't like Zax that much either.

La Hacienda (also in Moab) was good considering how cheap it was, just avoid the lobster encheladas.

Want to eat good in Moab? Pasta Jay's or Buck's Grillhouse.

Haven't tried Buck's, and will on your advice. Pasta Jay's didn't do too much for me. I caught Zak's on a good night, I guess. Heard locals say they food at Zak's will sometimes make you yell at the ground.

I'm a fool for the Diner. Just something about the place -- easy-going feel, nice staff, good homestyle food. Plus, Lin Ottinger eats there.

Place to avoid: Center St. Cafe. Supposedly a four-star establishment, but the service is lousy (rude), the food forgettable, and the prices insane. Also, the Sunset Grill is a great setting, but the food isn't much to write about.

Pasta Jay's is marginal in my opinion too. Eddie Mcstiffs really only has one good thing on the menu (don't order steak there!). I have been consistenly pleased with the Brewery, and Fiesta Mexicana.

When at the Brewery, order the SMOKED PLATTER...mmmmmm!!!

Zax is decent. Definitely not the best pizza I've had. In fact, I think Dominoes is comparable. The only saving grace that Zax has is their pizza bar, and the fact that they will custom make you any kind of pizza you want.

But then again.....I'm a bonafide food snob.

When you go to Buck's get your steak "cowboy style." You've got to give Pasta Jay's another chance. The chicken pesto is awesome.

I can understand liking the Moab Diner. It has an endearing atmosphere, a tasty menu, and reasonable prices. I just end up eating there too often when I'd like to try somewhere else.

I think the Chineese place is called the Szechuan. I did like the buffet as a cheap way to fill the hole, but it's on a par with other Chineese buffets, cheap and greasy. I've never eaten there for dinner.

I've never heard a guy tell me he likes Zax. Every time I hear somebody spouting off about how good that place is it's a girl. Not saying that girls can't eat what they like, I'm just saying it's chick food so be warned.

Been to both. Center Cafe tried to serve me raw venison, and the staff got REAL offended when I asked it be cooked. Then, when our table of 11 asked the ticket be split (in like 3 parts), the waitress threw her notes and a calculator at me and said, "Here. YOU figure it out."
