so after much painful deliberation i have decided to embrace the dslr. went and got a 400d today. they tried to sell me on the 30d, which does have a more user friendly interface, but that is not worth teh extra hundreds. same sensor in both, 10m cmos, and i believe he said the 400d has the "sensor shaker" to help batttle dust. can't wait to go use it ! hope i don't regret it. it was this or a shen hao 4x5. the 400d can't touch the quality of a 4x5 chrome, but teh greater dynamic range, shorter set-up and tear down time, and elimination of teh scanning chromes step (which coudl get costly) helped win me over. and of course it is much lighter and easier to shoulder. also went w/ the ef-s 17-85 instead of the crappy kit lens. one light tight box is about as good as another, but it is all about the glass !

god i hope i don't break it too soon !!!

actually, the XTi has a more advanced sensor than the 30D. The 30D is only 8mp, the XTi 10. Ultimately, the quality is pretty similar, but you have to love the lightweight of the rebel. I am sure you'll love it.

The 30D should be replaced sometime this year with the new sensor.

I have the 30D and love it, but the 400d has the larger 10 mp and the self-cleaning sensor. I'd like to have those in my camera, but overall I'm very pleased with it. I had a 300d and had a shutter/auto focus problem after 10k shots. Hopefully, the 400d will last better.

Get good glass, for sure. I have the 10-22 mm EF-S, the 24-105 mm L and the 100-400 mm L...all great lenses.
