I was there last year, while the Skywalk was still in permitting. The road is much like Utah back roads, very rough until it reaches the Hualapai Reservation (14 miles). Then you could get a "package" without lunch and skipping the petting zoo. In other words, a bus ride to only two overlooks and a walking tour of several styles of Indian homes. This cost $28 pp at the time, but must have been eliminated now that the Skywalk is in.

The Hualapai don't seem to understand the right way to run a park. Sure they rip off a few people, but will never get repeat business or word of mouth business. They also do a lousy job of the helicopter concession at Havasu Canyon, given them by the Havasupai for some unknown reason.

I've met a few Hualapai and they were very nice, reasonable people. I assume their leaders are the weak link, just as with most tribes.

I don't know about you, but it sounded like a lame rip-off to me even if it was free.

We got back on the bus to get out of the wind and cold and be driven to the Guano Point, which had food

Not sure if I'd want to eat food at 'Bat Poop Point' :ne_nau:

Wow and I thought the $25 per person was expensive now it ends up being $75 I know I will never see it for that.

Jeez, if I wanted to look over the edge that bad I would grab my rope and harness, find a nice tree to sling around, hook up and lean back. Since I have the gear, its all FREE. 75 buck.... :nono:

I would be more apt to give my credit cards to a bum than pay 75 bucks for that joke....many of those people commenting were idiots. Some people get so offended and try to make everything into a emotional dramatic battle. What hosers!

I'd like to see how this thing turns out for them :ne_nau:

The Hualapai have nothing invested in the Skywalk. Some billionaire funded construction and gets his cut. He may or may not recover his investment, but it's all gravy to the Hualapai.

Last November, my four year old son and I did a three night backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon. The permit and fee was $65 paid to the NPS, not far from the $75 charged by the Hualapais.

But Scott, you got 3 nights for 2 people, not a 10 minute walk for 1 person. And NPS funds go into maintaining the park...well worth it.

Yes, it was sarcastic.

True, but not usually the part of the park we went to (though parts of a trail were maintained after a flood).

The flaw with the NPS fees is that the fee is flat across the board. For example, if I do a trail-less hike in Marble Canyon, it's the same fee as doing the Bright Angel Trail. Marble Canyon has no facilities and almost zero maintainence cost. The Bright Angel is a well maintained trail, complete with water taps, picnic tables, bathrooms, and even telephones. I wish they would use different fee systems.

That's a whole different topic though.
