Hi there!

I'm sure some of you had done this hike before and can give me some hints.
I'm planning to do it a the beginning of May.
Probably the water will be cold, so neoprensocks and -boots might be a good choice, right?
Anyone living in the area and knows about the water level? I mean, has it been raining a lot lately.

Would be really helpful to read your opinions!

I was also thinking about Water Canyon near Hildale, but probably Kanarra Creek is the better choice, or what?

Greetings
Eva

yeah, the neosocks would be helpful in kanarra in may i imagine, if the water is particularly cold.

water volume and the current ladder situation would be helpful to know. considering that there was very little snow this year, the flow likely will be greatly reduced in may, unless it storms very hard before that time.

tanya and bo know a bit about water canyon, so they should be able to help you out.

Right now there is still a little snow up in the Kolob area so I think for now Kanarra is still going to be cold. That one is on my list for May/June, too.

I have a good source for Water Canyon and can get you good info when you're on your way or even here.

Weren't there some local issues about getting into Kanarra Creek?

No access issues that I am aware of. Kanarra is a popular hike for the locals and a very pretty canyon to visit. Have fun.

Issues are trash related. Here's the Spectrum story from last October.

Kanarraville seeks county's help to protect creek for its drinking
water
By MEG CADY
mcady@...

PAROWAN - Kanarra Canyon has become a popular spot for hikers and
campers from all over the country. It features a beautiful creek and
fantastic waterfalls. The problem is that the creek provides drinking
water to the people of Kanarraville. Town Board members Kay Carter
and Barbara Munford came before the Iron County Coordinating Council
on Wednesday to ask for help in protecting their drinking water
source.

A growing problem

Munford admitted she loves to hike up the scenic trail to the narrow
slot canyon that attracts so many other groups, but said people are
destroying the area. "I feel like they're ruining our canyon," she
said.
The trail is eroding from foot traffic, and residents find trash,
like beer bottles and diapers, in the stream.
Carter said she's counted groups of 500 students hiking the area at
one time. A water pipe has become exposed and bent from people
walking over it.Other problems include speeding along the road, which
goes through a residential neighborhood, and dust from the traffic.
Scott Hacking, Department of Environmental Quality district engineer,
came to discuss the town's options to restrict access to the canyon.
The property belongs to the Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands
Administration, but restrictions will need to come at the local level.
Jim Martin, Division of Drinking Water environmental scientist, said
because Kanarraville already has a water management plan for the
area, there's little the division can do.
Kevin Carter, director of SITLA, said selling the property will be
complicated because the area has been in public use for at least 10
years and it's part of a wilderness study area.
The road currently has RS 2477 designation, which is granted by the
federal government to guarantee public rights of way.
Carter said if the county wants to relinquish the designation, SITLA
would have no objections to Kanarraville closing off the road. But
cutting off access will be difficult because the area is so popular.
Martin said commissioners can pass a countywide ordinance to protect
the water resource.
County Planner Reed Erickson said another option is for Kanarraville
to create a zone outside its town limits with the agreement of the
county to restrict use in that area.
"That may be more applicable than a countywide ordinance," he said.
Carter and Munford agreed to meet with county representatives to
discuss a possible solution.

Hi!

It's a while that I've been here for the last time, but didn't have that much time. Since three weeks we're back from our three weeks lasting trip to the USA and we finally did Kanarra Creek.
Enclosed some pics...

Cool photos, Jolly! Looks like they added on from last year. Same log last October without the bottom construction -- it was still easy enough to get up.

RE Trash -- I'm friends with somebody who lives in Kanarraville and while trash is an annoyance, the general feeling is still very welcoming to hikers. (I would guess that the majority of "hikers" don't bring a sixpack with them and leave the bottles on the shore?) Local youth groups go into the canyon several times a year and clear out all of the trash. It's for everybody to enjoy, but tread lightly. Best! -Joe

Hi there!

Glad you like my photos.
It's the first time I made some on my own (just bought a camera) and with these I'm really satisfied.
I'm still having a look at all the photos I've taken.
Sooner or later I might present some more from other Utah locations...

Up to the second big waterfall. My husband continued another half mile further on, I didn't felt like getting totally wet like the couple that we've met after climbing up the second waterfall... my husband made it without getting that wet, but I know me :-)...

Hmmm... If memory serves, I believe my photo was actually before that big set of storms. Looking at Jolly's photos, they added an extra metal formation(?) to the bottom of it. Fascinating little construction. Seems to morph every year. Who do we credit these ladders to?

My favorite shot in there is from 2004:
http://www.citrusmilo.com/zion2004/joebraun_04302.jpg

This formation got totally washed away during the insane runoff of 2005 and the waterflow has changed and that big boulder has rotated down a bit. I love seeing how things change over the years!
