I thought someone else would have already mentioned this in the forum, but I did a search -- no results - so I thought I would share this with everyone. It's a neat web tool that's useful for hiking, biking, jogging, etc. It's a little widget that uses Google Maps - and they recently added Topo Maps - which is awesome. It would be a good thing to include in a Trip Report - at least for those trips that you don't mind sharing the EXACT location of.

You might need a little help with your first map so here are some instructions.

1. Pan and Zoom to the area of interest. Zoom in close enough that you can trace your path at your desired level of accuracy. Note, this is where you might want to switch between Map / Satellite / Hybrid / Topo depending on your preference. Also note that the different map formats don't match up exactly - but they are pretty close.

2. Click on the "Start Recording" button

3. Double click your starting point - and then double click the rest of the points along your route.

3a. If you returned along the same path, you can click the "Complete there and back route" and it will
automatically retrace your path back to the starting point

4. Click on "Save Route" - it will create a web link - I suggest you bookmark this or email it to yourself or something so you can find it later.

5. If you want to create another route, click on "Clear points and start over".

Enjoy! If you make a map - share it with us - post a link here or in your TR!

Here's an example - a screenshot of my 5 mile run :

Sombeech, did you check this out?

I did. I'm wondering if I can use it for those Google Earth trails.

I just tried with my hike today up Coldwater Canyon, but I can't see the trail thru the trees (isn't that supposed to be the forest?)

Maybe there is something I am missing, dunno, but it would be cool to keep track on this as well as my MapSource program. Yeah, Im a Garmin Guy.

Yes you can.
Save this as a short cut in your browser
javascript:(function(){var script=document.createElement('script');script.src ='http://www.elsewhere.org/GMapToGPX/gmaptogpx.js';document.getElementsByTagName('head' )[0].appendChild(script);})()

Create your map here http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
when you are done click on that shortcut it will give you something like this.

<xml>

The topo map format shows a path in Cold Water Canyon - but the path ends at about 5600 ft. elevation.

Yeah - sometimes the dern trees get in the way!
