My 7 year old asked if we could start reading this series. I'm not looking forward to it.

7 might be a bit young but then maybe not.

At first I didn't want to have anything to do with Harry Potter.

Then, on a trip to the Teton Base Camp near Jackson, Wyo with some explorer scouts, we put in the audio book for Harry Potter. We so engrossed in hearing the tale of the first Quidditch match, that we voted unanimously to remain sitting in the Suburban to listen to the end of the match and the chapter. I was hooked and have since read them all.

I read the Harry Potter Series after book 4 came out (while I was in Europe). I loved it!

A 7 year old asking to read and you're not happy about it? At least they're not playing XBox all night long.

It's a great series (even if the fifth book needed an editor), and the tone and maturity level of the books progress as the characters get older. As such, some of the later books may be a little too dark for a 7 year old.

Another great series that you may want to try with them is the Chronicles Of Prydain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Prydain) by Lloyd Alexander. It's a great fantasy adventure about an assistant pig keeper who yearns to be a great hero. (Ignore the horrible Disney movie, The Black Cauldron, that was based on the first two books.)This may be my favorite all time series of books, even passing The Lord of the Rings and The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Read them all, started around when the second or third came out. A few years ago, I read the first one to the kids (a few pages every night) when they were about 6 and 4. They liked it, but have been ambivalent about continuing with the series on their own... I keep reading them, though. :2thumbs:

I am not a fan of Rowling. After reading the 1st 2 books I've decided she is a rip off. There are so many other fantasy author's that are much more interesting.

That said I wouldn't mind to have 1/10 of her bank account.
