I've been feeding my cat the Nutra Max for a long time because it was supposed to be the "good stuff" you buy from the vet or specialty pet stores. She ended up spending a few days at the vet's last week because her kidneys were trying to shut down. Luckily she is a younger kitty and was (before the bad food) in really good health.

I think it costs more to be at the vet's than in the hospital these days!!

I've been feeding The Steve (http://flickr.com/photos/kris247/tags/steve/) Nutro about a year now, and didn't even know about the recall until I went to buy more food last week and it was all off the shelf. I can't believe how many brands were affected.

I've been keeping an eye on him, and fortunately he seems to be just fine. Well, except that he doesn't like the replacement food that I bought him. But, I hear you about the vet bills, in the past two years I've paid more than $3000 in veterinary bills. (Two knee surgeries for Steve, and a few overnight stays for my rabbit, Tim).

Abby and I read about that with a great deal of concern. We love our dogs as much as anyone loves a pet. Fortunately our dogs were not effected. I hope your cat gets well. In the mean time, read this...

I knew she was sick almost immediately. She's never gone anywhere in the house outside of her litter box, and the day I brought her in to the vet, she walked right in front of me and wet on the carpet. Instead of running away like she did something wrong. she lay down next to the wet spot. I knew then she was trying to tell me something was wrong. I hadn't heard about the food recall yet. I figured she had a kidney or urinary infection of some sort which is rather common in cats. But it was the food, and we caught it early. She is home running around again. :2thumbs:

Was the food only the wet stuff or dry was affected too? We used to feed our dog Mia the Hills Science Diet. I was told by vets that the best foods dont have corn or other "fillers" as the first ingredient, Hills does and it is sold in almost all the vets offices!!!! We switch to Purina I think. Does anyone know of a list of the foods affected?

Below are lists of specific brands recalled by Menu Foods, in addition to Procter & Gamble's recall of certain Iams and Eukanuba products. Menu Brands lists the brands on its Web site, www.menufoods.com, and advises consumers to call 1-866-895-2708 for more information.

My understanding is that only wet foods were recalled, not the dry foods. In fact, I was still able to buy Nutro dry foods even though all the off the wet stuff was taken off the shelf at PetCo.

I had a vet appointment for another reason this week, and asked him if there's any difference between the store brand stuff and the high end foods since they're all made by the same supplier. He said that the supplier, Menu Foods, manufacturers each food the specifications of the brand, so even though the hyper-expensive Nutro stuff is made in the same factory as the cheap-ass Western Family food it's not necessarily the same ingredients.
