Hey all,

I have been to Zion a couple of times, however, this time I am bringing my gf, and she is a so-so hiker. We are gonna go within 1- 1 1/2 months from now. I was thinking of doing Angels Landing (done once before, which I liked), however, I would like to go on a less-frequented, more remote hike away from the Disneyland like atmosphere of the Valley. Any suggestions? Maybe something involving waterfalls, non-rappelling slot canyons, easy cheesy hiking, or whatnot. Something fun, different, and where I will not get trampled by the crowds. We do not care about getting a little wet, and it is no matter now dirty we get. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone know how to access that place which has the large collection of dinosaur tracks? Is it worth the trip?

Thanks,

Win

Hopefully, you've got Tanya's site, www.zionnational-park.com, alot of the best info around. You need to look at the Narrows, you can hike as far as you want upstream, rent gear in Springdale (shoes, staff).

You'll love the East side. any drainage is cool and Tanya has alot of hikes in that area. I just did Hidden Arch last weekend using her beta, short, not too strenuous and you get a back country feel.

Let me know when you're about to come and I'll let you know what to expect weather wise.

Win

I really enjoyed Petroglyph Canyon, on the east side. Short hike, we spent maybe a couple hours total wandering around there. Great petroglyphs - not advertised anywhere.

I'm guessing the large collection of dino tracks your are referring to might be the ones in Subway?

http://climb-utah.com/Zion/subway.htm

Subway is one of the most famous hikes in the park. If you plan to do it get your permits now.

From the top down is pretty hardcore. From the bottom might be more of the GF route. Read the info on the page above and if you have any questions just ask.

A hike to a waterfall.... away from the crowds..... I would do Double Falls. She will love it. It's a long day hike, with nothing technical. The only thing is the water might still be uncomfortable when you are going and the water might be flowing a lot that time of year. You can wear some neoprene socks and 5'10's and be comfortable. You might want splash gear on your legs too. Call the VC and get conditions before you go.

I second Right Fork, there are no tourists there at all. We went in March a few years back and met only one couple in 2 days.

I didn't know about these dino tracks actually...thanks for pointing them out. I recall someone talking about a property owner in the St George/Zion area having a bunch of dino tracks on their property or something...or maybe I was just smoking too much crack again....hard to cut down.

 You guys here are so sweet!!!

Here are a few more suggestions ---
Pine Creek -- not the slot section, but the creek. I think it's beautiful in there. There are pools where you can swim and its a relaxing jaunt with stream crossing and boulder hopping.

http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-pine-creek-hike.htm

This one is a little harder, but away from the crowds and spectacular!

If you happen to be in Zion just after or during a rain storm..... Do Many Pools! I love that one. It would be the easiest on this list of hikes.

I haven't visited them. I almost did the last time I was in St. George, until I learned that they charge admission to see them. I'm a cheapskate.
