My dad and I took a trip to Arches NP last weekend, just him and I without our families. We went down Friday night after work and got there at about midnight so we pulled of on the old highway and camped just inside a sign that says "No camping beyond this point".

Saturday morning we started the day off hiking to Delicate Arch.

Notice the clouds at delicate. on the way down we walked over to the petroglyphs and by then it was clear blue skies.

We then met the ranger for our guided tour throught the fiery furnace at noon.

We went throught the fiery furnace on the ranger guided tour because it was recommended not to try it alone if you haven't been through before on climb-utah.com. I am glad we did. I walked right past the skull and only saw it after the ranger stopped us. Definintely worth it the first time through to pay the extra $6 a person for the Ranger guided tour. The ranger knew what he was talking about and it was cool to learn about how the area was formed and different stuff about the plants, animals, and geography.

We got out of the furnace at about 3 pm. and made our way to Devils Garden.

a view of some fins on the Devils Garden trail nearing the Double O Arch.
I believe that if you go on the primitive trail you go through those fins somewhere

The view to the South East from Dark Angel. The La Sal mountains in the background with snow on them. In the middle of the picture you can see the Fiery Furnace.

Rain clouds started coming in from the east when we started back from Dark Angel.
As we were going back toward Double O Arch we ran into a young couple who had just come from the primitive trail and turned right toward Dark Angel instead of going left back to the parking lot. They were pretty much out of water so my dad gave them one of his gatorades and we showed them the way back. The way from double o arch to the main trail is a little tricky to find especially in the dark. Scary to think about what would have happened if they got caught in the rain. They didn't have any jackets, and it was almost dark. My dad and I had headlamps and coats so we were ok.

We got back to our camp at about 7 pm that night.

Sunday we wanted to do Ring Arch and the tunnel before going home and Im glad we did. We didnt see anyone else the whole hike. It was awesome. Ring arch is one of my favorite spots in the park now.

Then we made our way to the tunnel.

It was an awesome NP that I have never been to and that I plan on taking my family to in April. I am excited next trip I will have some extra time to explore the furnace. I wanted to thank Shane for putting the infor for Ring Arch and the Tunnel on climb-utah.com worth the $25 all on its own. Definitely an area that I recommend visiting soon!

yeah, we were going to do Devils garden on Sunday but figured we had enough time so we just did it Saturday. My legs weren't sour but my knees were killing me on devils garden and all day sunday.

Jaxx- Those are some great pictures! I know that Devil's Garden is really popular but it is still among my favorite hikes in Utah.

Discgo-we only saw a handful of people once you get past landscape arch. I think fiery furnace was funner than devils garden, devils has way better panorama views though.

since we didn't have kids we hiked relatively quickly and did as much as we could.
If it wasn't for you posting your TR for the rappeling you did in Feb. then I probably wouldn't have picked Arches for this trip. after reading your report I had to go there. Then I joined the circle of freinds so I could get the map for ring and tunnel. So thanks, I owe it all to you haha.

Great report Jaxx, glad you guys had a blast. I was surprised to see 35mm pictures, have been a while since i saw those online. It took a lot of scanning, you are a true uutahn now! :lol8:

Next time you go down to Arches, get the beta from Ice about the "Tear drop" (is that the name)? If you are not into canyoneering, the hiking up on top is just as fun. If you like solitude.

Yeah, I only have a 35mm camera. It took a while to scan the pics in lol. I want a digital but I cant find one that is in my price range (I should say the price range my wife gave to me) :roflol: and does what I want it to do.
Thanks for the info on Tierdrop. That trail looks way fun. My dad and I were hoping to get some rappelling in but didn't have time. I will have to check that route out next time we are down there.
