The best value are probably tom's ropes.

my philosophy is - if they sell it for what i want to use it for, its fine. i have had pmi ropes teh last 3 years. a caver i know recommended them and they were the cheapest so there i went. i wash them as needed and inspect for wear and they have been fine. brands and names don't mean anything in the end is my honest opinion, other than personal preferences based on whatever reasons. w/ the canyoneering ropes something that sheds water well is a big plus, and there are plenty of brands to choose from.

my only petty comment i have about your ropes Tom, is that there is no ORANGE color choice... :haha:

ORANGE ropes just look so great in photos :roflol:

besides that, man they are really nice!

Working on new colors, sort of, so this year's 8mm will be red and orange on white. One of the reasons I can offer the ropes at such a good price is that the white fiber is 20% cheaper than the dyed fibers.

I will sacrifice the 20% for the white fibers vs. pretty photos. Ain't no rope gonna make me better lookin'...... Although pretty rope may distract folks from my looking at my mug.... maybe I do want orange ropes. Never mind..... bring on the orange ropes. :lol8:

Thanks Shane,

Noob depends on your opinion. Noob here as far as posts. I have been lurking for a while and one of your fine members convinced me to get an account and contribute.

O.K. the commercial was a lame first post. It was a post I noticed today and thought I would try to save the guy a few bucks if he wants his ropes now. We all know ropes ain't cheep and to save a few bucks on something that will need to be replaced sometime might do a person good.

I will try to contribute something more beneficial to the group from now on. That is if I am welcome to play along.

this illustrates why i sometimes (often) find online communities quite humorous. they operate as any other group dynamic does in an hierarchical fashion, almost a caste system. leaders, followers, lurkers, outsiders, insiders, whatever... very personality driven. its just human nature. funny how unfamiliarity drives reaction.

welcome jared! you're definitely welcome here :2thumbs:

as far as an avatar there are a couple ways of doing it. currently(i think still?) you cannot load an avatar from your computer. easiest thing might be to load it on your webpage at northwastoutfitters and then specify the URL of the image where it asks in your profile.

there is also an "avatar uploading fix" in the all about uutah

http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2034

meant for uploading an image, so you can use the url.

the only issues are pixel count & image size

Hey Jared, since you are here someone was asking about canyon courses a few days ago and your outfit was mentioned.

Here is the orgianal thread.

You are welcome to help him out and mention services you provide. Pimping a business around here is acceptable in moderation by contributing members.

I read that post and was going to pipe in but, now I thought I might be chastised and hung out to dry. No, JK. We are doing an advanced course this weekend and I am home for lunch trying to catch up on the business end of things. I will see if I get time to jump in there and say hi.

Stefan, I do have my avatar on my website and tried to upload that from my profile page ( http://www.northwashoutfitters.com/photos/0071.jpg ) but it just gave me an error. I then tried to go through the avatar upload fix page and it kicked me out 5 times. I will play with it some more when I have time.

On a side note, this thread was supposed to be about ropes, it has turned into being about me (which is OK). So to answer more questions about rope:

I gave the where to buy, it was also asked about what type so here are my thoughts:

Aside from orange being nice in pics there is a more practical side to BW ropes. (Sorry Tom)

For a beginner I would always suggest a BW 9.2mm Canyon Rope. Here is why. They are more supple. The BW rope is softer and easier to tie knots in and easier to pull. They whip a bit easier. I have found Tom's ropes stiff and harder to tie knots in and they are a bit harder to pull because of how stiff they are. I used one last weekend and tied a macrame retreivable anchor into it and when I started pulling it it was stuck the loop would not pull out. I had to go back up and release from top (a 1/2 hr back around to top)

Now, I do use Tom's ropes for teaching our courses. We use them exclusivley because they are more cost effective when you have to constantly replace ropes (Tom an order is coming this week). I do carry for personal use however the BW ropes because I find them easier to work with. YMMV.

Thanks for making me feel welcome.

that's okay jared, threads here often spur tangents.

um. so it wouldn't allow you to use it as an avatar because it's 88K. even if you then uploaded it there, it couldn't be used because it's still over 88K. but are you saying you couldn't even post to the "avatar fix" page? the only purpose that page serves is to upload the image. since you can use your webpage, it's really not necessary.

but the file must be 49K or less to use as an avatar. also when posting images in general, they must be less than 256K to upload.

anyway i shrunk it for you here. so rightclick and get the url. then it should work since it's only 4K

let me know if it doesn't work.
