(KSL News) Dozens of bags of explosives were stolen from a construction sight near St. George.

The Deseret Morning News reports the 30- and 50-pound bags of ammonium nitrate were locked in a storage bunker and clearly marked "explosive."

This is the second time bags were stolen. The first time was last October.

St. George Police Sergeant Craig Harding said they're "looking at kids and criminal mischief, up to terrorists."

Ammonium nitrate is used in construction and in agriculture. It's also one of the components of a fertilizer bomb, the same type used in the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.

I wouldn't be too worried about this. We use ammonium nitrate based explosives out here at the mine, but the ammonium nitrate by itself is completely harmless -- it's virtually the same stuff you put on your lawn to green it up. In order to make ammonium nitrate go boom, you need fuel oil, blasting caps, boosters, shock tubes, an ignition sytem, and the know-how to put it all together. All of the above ingredients are extremely difficult to come by, and I seriously doubt that the thieves have all of the above materials.

It's like having somebody steal a bag of flour, and then be worried that someone might make a cake out of the flour alone.

Obviously whoever stole it has something in mind or planned out

Soak ammonium nitrate with diesel fuel and ignite..... not really rocket science. This is exactly what Timothy McVay used to bomb the OK government building.

You can buy ammonium nitrate at your local IFA, they don't even blink until you start to load your second pick-up truck full.

Just look for the greenest grass in St. George. There you'll find the ammonium nitrate thief. He is a freaking gardener. :hippy:

True, but you have to have the right mixture of AN to FO. You can't just mix them together at any ratio to create a high explosive. Plus, you have to have the right hardware to set the charge -- black cats won't do the job.

I found this out last summer. My friend and I made a big rocket. It took us a dozen prototypes because we had a very hard time getting the chemical ratio set properly. It kept going back in forth between bomb, and smoke bomb.

Just Google a recipe if you want to make a bomb, I just looked and there are several dozen on the internet. As I said, this ain't rocket science. :cool2:

This is pretty interesting

I do.

With the patriot act, you never know when you are going to end up on a Government watch list over something stupid like this.
