Help me get out of this email subscription

I have been receiving these obnoxious emails like the one below. I have blocked each individual email, but they keep coming from different addresses. :frustrated: They don't make any sense and I don't know what the motive is for them sending to me, but I get 4-5 every day. I use outlook express. I've noticed some of you have some great computer credentials. Can anyone give me a suggestion?

I get those same ones. They are the worst of all my spam mail. My yahoo groups even get them and they rarely get any spam.

As far as the spam problem, this is why I went to Gmail instead of using Outlook. Gmail's spam filter is exceptionally good, although once in a while a spam message does get into my Inbox, and I do get the occasional false positive.

If you're stuck with Outlook or Outlook Express I would check into one of the many bayesian spam filters that are out there. It's been so long since I've used one I don't have any recommendations, but at the very least it should give you a nice long afternoon of boring reading.

Another idea, if you're not adverse to changing e-mail addresses, is to use Gmail, but get it using POP through Outlook Express. Either that, or set Gmail to forward all incoming messages to your regular e-mail account. Either way, you get the benefit of Gmail's spam filtering without having to go through a web client.

Good call Udink. Also, I would be cautious of those emails. With no links to any websites, they may appear benign, but in reality could be installing spyware on your C drive. Just a thought...

I think in outlook you can block a whole domain if they are coming from the same one. You go to Tools, Message Rules, Blocked Sender List and just add the whole domain to it

ie @yahoo.com

the only problem with doing it this way is it will block everything from that domain.

I've thought about changing but it is our business email and would be very painful to switch addresses. Shhh... I have a personal hotmail account and I've had almost no problems with spam, and I hope to keep it that way.
The thought of filtering email through gmail is interesting. I may have to look into that, but I hate complicating something that should be so simple. :nod: [/quote]

The general consensus is that these random nonsense spam messages are being sent through to "untrain" spam filters. For awhile spammers were using bits of classical literature, but it looks they're now just stringing a bunch of gibberish together. Irritating.

Regarding spyware: in theory it can't be installed just through an e-mail. However, if you're using Outlook that theory is about as valid as my theory that humans evolved from an ancient form of EZ Cheeze. Outlook has been know to have many, many security vulnerabilities that would allow viruses to install without the user's knowledge. (Thanks Microsoft!) Keeping your computer patched and up-to-date (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) is a pretty good defense (especially in conjunction with good anti-virus software).

How are your email addresses formatted for your business? If they're overly simple, like mike@yourdomain.com, you could be the lucky victim of a dictionary spam attack. Adding one extra character from their last name would effectively eliminate those.

Your email server should be able to subscribe to ORDB and other free services which lists IP's of bad spam drones with open relays or trojans, then you can have the emails checked against that.

Setting up SPF checks on the email server will take care of some problems by checking the senders IP address against the domain the email is supposedly from, however large companies like comcast and ups don't adhere to SPF friendly rules, so the only time it truly works great is when the sending domain has SPF setup in their DNS and the email didn't originate from the listed IP.

Setting up DomainKeys will help as well, but I've found it too complicated to deal with.

Bayesian filters probably won't work against the email you listed since it relies on the frequency of specific words to mark something as spam.

If your email admin isn't willing to take such measures, then yeah, just forward all your business mail from the server to a GMail account, download it through POP, and set your sending address in Outlook Express to be your business address. One problem with spam detection on GMail with that setup would be that it will see the email coming from your business server, and so it might not pick up on stuff like the SPF checking it does, and other stuff like that.
