Any hydrologists out there?

What would you estimate the streamflow rate is in the following photo (in cfs)?

I have no clue, but when I do Canyons with Bo ... he can tell. Like at Kolob Canyon... it was too much! :lol8:

Is that the Grand Gorge of Muddy Creek?

I'd guess about 1,000-1,500 cfs.

Do I win...?

Ok I am cheater. Was that pic was really taken on March 7, 2005?
Here is the flow rate (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/dv?cb_00060=on&cb_00095=on&format=gif_default&begin_date=2005-02-20&end_date=2005-03-10&site_no=09332800&referred_module=sw) for the muddy near hanksville.
The river looks really high too me, so either the date or the data is incorrect.

This is the Muddy Creek near the Hidden Splendor Mine. We were en route to The Squeeze. I believe the photo was uploaded on March 2005, because it was taken with a 35mm film camera. I want to say it was somewhere around July - August 2004.

My guess is around 200.

Looks like 350-400cfs similar to the flow of the Provo river during the Summer.

My guess is around 200.That was my guess as well, so I'll just "Price-is-Right" it at 215. :)

10,000cfs - not at peak - 20,0000cfs at peak :ne_nau:

It's a trick question. There is no river.

Oh, you guys are just sooooo funny! What started as a sincere request for a professional opinion ended up being a comedy act.

I think 200 cfs is a little low. The USGS considers a stream as "low" when it reaches 80 cfs. Low is little more than a trickle. I would say the swollen Muddy Creek in the photo is somewhere around 300 - 400 cfs. But that's just a wild ass guess, condering the Green River flows around 1500 - 2000 cfs, and the Colorado River flows at around 3000 - 4000 cfs. :ne_nau:

The reason I guessed 200 because the Muddy looked just like that when we were there at 200 cfs. :2thumbs:

Just a guess though.

80 being a trickle depends on how wide the channel is. 80 cfs = waist deep in the Chute.

I guessed the width and depth, and then multiplied that sum by yet another assumption (flow rate). Mock me--and everyone else-- if you must, but sometimes I do really good guessing at things I know nothing about, so let's have the correct answer! Is the price right, Bob? :ne_nau:

Well, I don't know the correct answer -- which is why I was asking. After yesterday's hike down to the Dirty Devil though, I think Scott is closer to the correct flowrate. We hiked down to the Dirty Devil, and waded it yesterday. It was flowing at 100 cfs. Here is what that looked like:
