Lawmakers Approve University Status For UVSC

OREM Utah Valley State College will become Utah Valley University in 2008, with new academic programs, more staff and extra space.

The change was approved by the Legislature, along with $8 million, and awaits Gov. Jon Huntsman's signature.

Utah Valley, which has 24,000 students, will join Brigham Young University as a second university in Utah County.

"BYU is an international school now. It is bringing in students from all over the world," Rep. Stephen Clark, R-Provo, said. "So the local, state and Utah County students are in a void. We can't get a university education. This is a very good move."

After a final vote Tuesday, Senate President John Valentine, R-Orem, Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, and Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, received green sweat shirts that said "Utah Valley University."

College President Bill Sederburg, a former Michigan lawmaker, enjoyed seeing broad support in the Legislature.

"Maybe it means we should have asked for more money," he said.

Yeah, I graduated in 06. I wonder if they'd change our diplomas to show Utah Valley University.
