I believe that this kind of stuff happens with probably alot of things that have to get repaired (computers, electronics, etc..)

I've found that independent shops are the way to go. :2thumbs: Stealerships and other national repair chains are just out for your money and don't really care about repeat business. I had what seemed like a serious problem with my truck a couple of years ago, and the Ford dealer in Orem said I had a hole in one of my pistons and that I basically needed a new engine. BS, I said, and had the truck towed all the way to Price for a second opinion at a locally-owned diesel shop, and they found that one of the glow plugs had backed out of the hole and was letting compression out through the top. It was a $20 part, but the stealership wanted to sell me a new engine.

I've learned some hard lessons in auto repair, and the bottom line is that when big $$$ are on the line, get a second opinion, preferably somewhere where the employees have a personal stake in the success of the business.

The Jiffy Lube employees who ripped off the news guy probably didn't pocket the money, they were just lazy and didn't want to do the work. They gained nothing, monetarily, by stiffing the customer, although the franchise owners undoubtedly did. Maybe it was an "unofficial" policy to rip people off? :ne_nau:

After watching this video and hearing the stat about 5 out of 9 Jiffy Lube's didn't change the filter, I won't go back to a Jiffy Lube ever! If you are going to rip us off, you could at least charge less.

My Mom said that when she was young her Dad would change the oil in the family car every 1000 miles. If they were on a road trip they would just pull off into the breakdown lane, he would crawl under the car, and change the oil.

I don't even know how to change my own oil. And, even if I did, I don't know how to dispose of it.

Changing your own oil is incredibly simple. But it is a pain to dispose of your own oil.

I just dump mine down the gutter. All 15 quarts of it. :haha:

Ok, just kidding. I take mine to Checker Auto Parts here in Price, they've got a big tank in the back of the store where you dump your oil, then fill out a paper with your name, address, grade of oil, and how many quarts you disposed of. Pretty simple actually, and I think a lot of parts stores up north do the same.

I heard that oil changing companies are legally obligated to accept your oil, but I'm not positive on that.

My jeep has so much clearance that it is really easy to change it out. My friend is a mechanic so I just dump my oil at his place.

My Saturn has no clearance at all and I would rather pay the 18 bucks then go under it.

My Subaru is new to me and I've only changed the oil once.

Jiffy Lubes have been notorious ripoff operations for years. Why anyone would go there is beyond me.

I change the oil and do all the maintenance on all my vehicles. That way, I use the best oil, the best filters, and I know everything is done right. In my communty, there is an oil disposal tank at the landfill, which is nice.

Even if Jiffy Lube does the work, they tend to use the cheapest materials available.

For the record, I use NAPA Gold filters (made by Wix), or Fleetguard if I can find them. My diesel professor suggested never to use Fram or Autolite.

Thats why its just easier to spend $30 on an oil change at Jiffy Lube, but just keep and eye on them and make sure they do it right

not really to hard all you have to do is take it to Autozone and they will take it from at no charge. Not that hard to me

Most of those places won't allow you in the shop. And again, you're probably getting substandard filters, etc. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, go to a good local shop and bring good-quality oil and filters with you. Then let them do the job.

Unless you like premature engine failure.

You just take it to the local auto parts store, closest to me is checker, so I take it to them and its free. I do my own oil because I like to work on my car. I wont take it to Jiffy Lube ever thats for sure

I stopped taking vehicles to Jiffy Lube about 5 years ago. They forgot to put bolts back on my skid plate. I called them on it and they didn't seem too concerned. I had other problems with them too and I started to wonder about their ability to perform the simplest of tasks. I even wrote a letter to them and got an apology, but I haven't been back.

Having worked for a time as a service writer on big rigs, I believe it is critical to have a qualified mechanic on hand for any sort of work on a vehicle. I could easily spend half a day fixing stuff I found just doing a basic oil change on most tractors (and often did). There is just so much to watch for that even the best mechanics will miss things.

Well, I am a computer guy :comppunch: and don't work on cars, so where could the like of me go for an honest service? I live on the east side of the valley, right by the Millcreek canyon, any decent shops around here? :patch:

I once took my POS 1995 Plymouth Neon to WalMart to get the oil changed. After I wandered around in store for about 25 minutes they called my name back to lube, saying that my car was ready. When I got back there they said they couldn't change my oil because they couldn't get the cap off the oil reservoir. They told me to take it the dealership.

When I told my Dad what happened he opened my hood, and twisted the cap right off, with no effort. We figure they must have either been twisting the wrong direction, or just plain stupid.

The "techs" at WalMart we nice enough to take the $2.50 in quarters I had in my ashtray. (Which I didn't realize until I was in the Taco Bell drive thru, and my Taco Bell money was missing).

Oh yeah, good point Kris--avoid Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Express like the plague! The TLE employees at my local Wal-Mart would barely qualify to be door greeters!

Besides that, some of their policies are just plain idiotic. They require you to use their Super Tech brand of oil, unless you pay for the "premium" oil & lube job, but they don't carry the necessary grade of oil for diesel trucks in the Super Tech brand, so you're forced to pay for the premium job. They also refuse to deal with any tires which are not the exact size listed on the sticker in your door jamb. I've simply quit doing business with them altogether because of those two policies.

CHANGE YOUR OWN DAMN OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree it's not that hard, the only reason i wouldn't is if your vehicle is still under waranty. It is possible to prove that you did it yourself but if you just take it to the dealer they keep it in their computer. The day the waranty is up is the day I will start doing my own oil again.

I've been to Jiffy Lube once. Once was enough. Never, ever, ever again. I was running late and didn't have time to change my own oil. I pulled in thinking I'd save some time. It took them 45 minutes. Not only that, I got hit up by some greasy auto glass salesman that wanted $20 to fix a giant crack I had in my windshield. Yes, they had an autoglass pimp right there in the Jiffy Lube snaring unsuspecting customers. If I'd done it myself I would've had it done in 30 minutes, without the autoglass pitch, and I would've gotten my tires rotated.

Up until then, and from now on I will do it myself (unless I become crazy rich). That way I can have a look at my brake pads while the tires are off. My car has 238k miles on it and it's only been taken to a mechanic four times. Everything else has been taken care of in my own garage.

Chainging the oil is pretty simple. However, on some models actually getting the filter off without getting oil everywhere is a pain.

Disposing of the oil is getting even easier. Just take it to Checker Auto, Auto Zone or one of those places and drop it off for recycliing.

No charge. Very little hassle.
