Anyone heading to the bike swap this weekend (March 3)? I'm supposed to be running that morning, but I think I'll head over there afterwards and check things out.

Last year was kind of a bust, but I think that's because I got there so late in the day.

Check out the webpage, it should answer most of your questions:

I would suggest getting there early, since (I imagine) most of the good deals are gone pretty quickly.

My friend, N8, has a somewhat amusing story (http://flickr.com/photos/nateone/107721485/) from last year's bike swap. And, don't worry, there are better bikes there than that old beat up Bridgestone.

I'll be there soon after the doors open. I picked up a really great wheel set a few years ago, like new, 90% off retail.

I wish they would publicize this event better, IMHO sports-am dosent do a very good job getting the word out. Hopefully turn out this year will be respectable.

Don't knock the Bridgestones! I had a MB1 as my commuter bike a few years back. Put a few hundred miles on it every month commuting to work year round. The thing was the most comfortable beast I ever laid my ass cheeks on. Had a brooks saddle that was older then myself when I purchased it at D.I. for $15. :)

I don't have anything against Bridgestones in general. Just the ones that were ran over by cars in apartment parking lots, then sold at the bike swap as if nothing had happened. ;)

I'm going to try my best to be there when doors open. I really want to buy a mountain bike. (And, since I have virtually no budget, the bike swap is just about the only place I'll find one).

I'll be wearing my Rad Racing (http://www.radtshirts.com/) shirt, so say "Hi" if you see me.

Yep, as in "Oh my heart! A backflip! Eat your heart out Hulk Hogan!". I just got it from www.radtshirts.com.

None of my friends properly appreciate it though.

What kind of ride did you end up with? Details please?

I bought a 2006 Specialized Rockhopper Comp for $530. It has decent, but not great, reviews on mtbr.com, and seems to be pretty much an entry level bike. (Which is what I was expecting).

I decided on going with a lower end bike because: A) I didn't have a huge budget, and B) I've never done any mountain biking before, and didn't want to drop a bunch of money on a bike that may potentially just sit in my garage.

I'm a little disappointed that the "locking" front fork doesn't fully lock out, but I imagine that I'll get used to it. I'm going to upgrade the pedals (the ones on the bike are Huffy quality), and pick up some slicks for commuting.

I wouldn't worry about the lockout on the front fork. You got a good deal. You'll never use that feature.
