My Dad wants to head out to the Deep Creeks sometime soon, and I figure as long as I'm out there I should hit Ibapah.

Is this doable as a winter hike? If so, do I need any technical gear?

Awesome, I didn't see these before in the 2007 Trip thread. Thanks for pointing it out.

Yeah, its doable. I skied it in the winter some ten years or so ago. We camped up high to break the approach up. I wouldn't think in most years you could drive very far up the canyon in the winter.

One thing to be mindful of, this is a big isolated mountain range, and, as such, the snow pack behaves accordingly. Ie, its "colorado-esque". Best bet for avy/snow conditions are the heli guys in the next range over (to the West). Rubies.

Neat seeing the old heliograph station base still up there. Lonely in the winter, too...

Can be very deep sugar for miles...

I was hoping you missed that, had you seen it already my post would have seemed a bit retarded.

You may have better luck from the west side. It's much shorter. You'll need permission from the Goshute tribe though. You wont make it far up Granite Creek in the winter. This is the east side route. Its a long steep trail. Here's some pics from my Ibapah hike last summer.
