I love my job. LOVE. But then, I went through some shitty ones to get here.
I have a deep abiding disdain for middle managers.
I think I'm like a lot of journalists and photographers, in that I find my employers to be soulless bean counters, but my own job rules all. Most of the people I know at newspapers are a lot more cynical than I am. I just love shooting news for a living.
And come on people, we live in a capitalistic society. If you want to work for a business that treats its people that way you want them to, go get a small business loan and start your own company.

I used to feel the same way. I looked forward to vacation and I never got to enjoy it because I was always thinking about how many days before I had to return to hell. I took a college course that talked a lot about stress and how to manage it. Ever since I have enjoyed my job, I do not get stressed out as much, and I have found that my employer is more willing to let me do what I want. I think a lot of it was my perspective about what I was doing. If anyone ever gets a chance to take a stress management course I would strongly recommend it!! :2thumbs:

Last Labor Day I got totally screwed by my job. I worked 4-10's at that job and always had Fridays off. Wednesday night of the holiday weekend a friend called me up and said "Two people just backed out on our Havasupai trip. You want to go?"
"When is it?" I asked.
"We're leaving tomorrow at 9 AM."
"Crap! I have to work."
"Call in sick."
"Oh no," I said. "I don't need that kind of karma.
So I got to work the next day. I sat down in the weekly Thursday "issues meeting." In the chit chat before the meeting started I told the group my story, to which the boss replied, "You should've called. I'd have let you go. Heck, why don't you go right now."
I almost left right then, but they were leaving at 9:00 and the meeting was at 9:00. I found out later that they didn't leave 'till well after noon. I totally could have made it. :frustrated:
Never again. From now on I'm packing my gear the night before and calling in to see what the boss says."

Had a boss once who I really disliked. In fact, my dislike for him was so great that I even wished him dead. And he shortly complied, suffering a fatal stroke at age 31. I know this is callous, but at the time I thought it was very cool.
Sad to say, however, this death wish thing apparently only works with bosses and not with politicians.

Holy crap! Remind me to NEVER piss you off.
I had the world's most evil guidance counselor at high school. When he had his monster stroke, I laughed at the news. Then felt really bad. But the stroke did take the butthole smirk off his face. Well, kind of made it droopy...

2 Weeks Notice, my favorite part. They never give YOU a notice when they are firing you.

Do you realize how much havoc an ticked off employee could cause a company if the employer had to give a two week notice? Yikes :eek2: And frankly, two weeks notice is really a courtesy and one that good employees enjoy cause they end up getting parties, gifts, hugs, etc. In reality, an employee can walk off the job and never come back just like an employer can fire a person the same day.

Of course! Why do you think we'd want it?
I left one job and everyone went away to a conference my last day, leaving me all alone. I dumped every file I'd created while there. Rubbed out every trace of my work.

Yea when we fire people here at my work I have to sit in the meeting where they tell them the news and then follow them around to get their things until I escort them off plant. This is a safety precaution just to make sure they don't dump any files or do anything else stupid.

That assignment would suck -- sounds scary in a way. I had to fire a few people and it's not pretty.
By the way, the company I dumped files on richly deserved the treatment. Trust me.

Yea it makes me feel like the bad guy. I just hope that no one finds out where I live. So far I haven't had any problems with anyone, but there have been a few I was a little worried about. :kicknuts:

Ditto. I love the work I do. I don't love the company, but they've been working on improving over the last couple of years.
(Air traffic control in Canada was "privatized" in 1996 - it's now run by a not-for-profit corporation with a Board of Directors made up of "stakeholders". Quite a good model for this type of business, but their HR policies were horrendous for years. VP-HR came from management of a paragon of poor labour/management relations - the post office - and insisted on treating people as a resource to be extract "efficiencies" from, rather than nurtured.)
Anyway: management - not so great. My job? Can't imagine doing anything else! There's not a day when I regret having to go to work. Lots of vacation, good pay, good benefits and retirement package. And it's fun...
I know of one person, though, who couldn't take the stress and actually threw up at the start of every shift. He had to get out. Have you seen "Pushing Tin"? The guy that couldn't even get in the door of the place - that does happen...
