You can check out the current action on Bourbon St. at the site below. If you're lucky, you may catch a wild sight here and there. :naughty: Things look pretty dull for the most part though - not many people at all. I don't think I've ever seen the crowd this small on Mardi Gras Day in the French Quarter. Looks like tourism is continuing to suffer since Katrina.

Only vicariously today.
I do plan to attend Jazzfest this year though. (last weekend on April/first weekend of May) Too many good people coming to play to miss it. My sister's company has a hospitality tent they set up with buffet, open bar and private porta-potties. yeehaw

We could have a Mardi Gras in Utah..... and we could substitute Hawaiian punch mixed with Sprite for the booze. :lol8:

Naw, for us hard core Utahans its Apple Beer and Hawaiian pizza. That apple beer has got a head on it I tell you what. Mix that with a little pineapple and Canadian bacon and you got party written all over it. :lol8:

Well after about 3 minutes of the "Burbocam" (there went three minutes of my life that I will never get back) I have learned some things... Drunk people can't dance, its mostly "very well nourished" folks who have the urge to have their body painted, and people like to flip off web cams. Hmmm, that was educational... :haha:

It can only be appreciated when one is in a certain frame of mind. :friday: Unfortunately, mostly what you are seeing are the tourists that come in for the festivities. The home crowd go other places in the city to have the most fun. :five:
just an FYI - it does get more lively at night.
:haha:

Thanks for the link.
Maybe one day I will venture forth and attend, but probably not. Its a long drive home after drinking all night.

Savannah - in your honor I have just put JAMBALAYA on to cook...yes, I cook! Here's the recipe:
4small whole bay leaves
1 tsp.salt
1 tsp. white pepper
1 tsp. dry mustard
1 tsp. red pepper
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. thyme
4 tbsp butter
Meat - 12oz. or so ham diced
12oz. or so sausage, diced
at least 12 oz. shrimp
11/2 C. chopped onions & celery
1C. chopped green bell peppers
11/2 tsp. minced garlic - or as many cloves as you can stand(heehee)
2C. uncooked rice
4C. chicken broth - canned is easiest,at least for me
combine seasoning, set aside ( I didnt - I put it all in at once)
In large skillet melt butter( I used the same pot or everything-big pot)
and add meat (put shrimp in last...right before the rice)
cook 5 min. add stock, stir well. Cook 10 min or so. stir in rice & cook 5 min. Add stock, stir well. Bring to boil, reduce heat, cook for 20 - 30 min..serve with french bread.
YES, it's done and ready to eat! YUM

Savannah - in your honor I have just put JAMBALAYA on to cook...yes, I cook! Here's the recipe:
Damn darlin'! You could be an honorary Cajun with that recipe. :2thumbs: Imagine a man that actually knows how to use bay leaves!! :hail2thechief: Here's a future tip for you. When you add the rice, instead of continuing to cook the jambalaya on the stove, place your cooking dish inside a 350 oven and bake for apprx. 30 min. Stir maybe once during cooking. It makes the rice extremely fluffy and it never comes out gooey.
I know I still owe you the Cajun shrimp dish and I promise to print it soon. A lot of the dishes I make were taught to me by others with the old "pinch of this" "handful of that" type measuring, so I will do my best in getting the ingredients correct.
I made Shrimp Creole for some friends on Sunday and it did not disappoint. Sorry Acca - I forgot to take a picture. :ne_nau: The bad thing about making that dish is that shrimp is SO expensive in Utah! The good thing about Cajun cooking is you have a base recipe and from there you make gumbo, etouffee or Creole depending on whether or not you add tomatoes and/or other items.

I actually like to make this in a dutch oven and cook it 'traditionally' ie; charcoal briquettes. and yes, very fluffy rice everytime! For those not used to the hot spicy flavor I'd cut the black pepper out but WHY?! :lol8:
...and I am awaiting your shrimp recipe! :slobber:

Yep - I said that things would get busier (and more weird) after dark. :eek2: The SAVE THE WORLD preacher (along with other radical groups) has been out there every Mardi Gras for as long as I can remember. I guess as a preacher looking for souls that need saving, the Quarter during Mardi Gras is like a gold miner hitting the mother lode. :lol8:
