Obviously, data centers represent a large opportunity for efficiency improvements in their energy consumption. No argument there. However, the statement "data centers use more energy than Utah" is but a small slice of the total pie. Has anyone computed the number of humans that would be required in the absence of those data centers, and how much enery would be consumed in housing them? Yeah, back in my working days, I managed large data centers.
