Just a few pics from Steel Bender on Friday. We were going to run some more trails, but my buddy rolled his Jeep (the green Rubi). So he didn't feel like going out again - I don't blame him. So my Wife, Son and I just spent yesterday in Arches taking it easy. Anyway... just a few pics from the trip, my 12 year old took all the ones he's not in :haha: .

Nice photos - thanks. Except I kept hoping to find a shot of a rolled Rubi... :ne_nau:

C'mon, surely you got photos of that!

Steel bender is a fun ride. Some pretty technical areas and some pretty areas. Do you have lockers? Last time we were out there we watched a guy almost drop off cliff bouncing his jeep. He eventually winched over the obstacle, but it was exciting to watch.

Why yes he does, it's a Rubicon :2thumbs: They come with factory lockers front and rear

Yeah... I do have some pics of it. Just didn't feel right to post them yet. Dude is still pretty unhappy about his Jeep (still owes lotsa $$ on it, same as I do on mine...). I'd hate for him to have to see the pics of his rig going over, just yet. Guess a couple of the tame ones can't hurt though...

Went over pretty hard. First one was almost an endo. Drivers rear tire made a big arc over the passenger front. Then went over again, then another half - went over 2.5 times total.

The spot where it happened is in one of the pics of my silver Rubi up above. It just looks really rough in the picture, but not steep. But that's because my Son was keeping the camera level with the Jeep. If you look close at that pic, you can see my buddies girlfriend standing on a rock behind me. Tilt the picture until she is standing straight up and you get a better idea of how a roll could happen there... Still though, we just picked a stupid ass line. I had my LWB Jeep in mind for the line, and it did okay on it. But looking at it after it was too late, it was easy to see how bad a line it was for a SWB. Lots of other things besides a different line that we coulda-shoulda-woulda. But hindsight is always 20/20 I guess...

We got it winched back over real clean without dragging it or anything. Spent some time reseating a bead that came off and checking to make sure the cylinders were clear and stuff. It fired up no sweat, only smoked for a minute. Seemed to drive just fine. Got all the mess cleaned up off the trail and then finished without any more problems. He was able to drive it home to SLC yesterday (in a pouring rain...). Didn't wander or shake or track weird or anything. Still adds up to a LOT of money to fix all the body damage though.

Nice pics, man. Sorry about your bud's jeep. That sucks.

I may snag a couple of these for the home page slideshow. :cool2:

Brakes will hurt ya more than they will help. It's all about the skinny pedal in those situations
Well, he can look at it like this now, he doesn't have to worry about scratches anymore :haha: I'm glad that all were OK :2thumbs:

Wow, pretty wild.

I just bought my '99 TJ last summer. I've driven it on logging roads around BC - some slightly rough, with good sized rocks (not boulders...) and a little steep.

I'm taking it to Moab in April, with my son. It's totally stock, so I'm not going to try anything scary with it (no matter how hard anyone here tries to talk me into it). Anyway, the plan is NOT to roll it. Just showed my wife these photos - hope she doesn't start getting nervous or anything... At least I don't owe anything on it.

Thanks for the photos!

Thanks for the nice pictures, up to the rollover! I've just had my Rubi lifted and can't wait to get it to Moab.

Yup. That's one of the things we talked about that "coulda-shoulda-woulda". Some throttle right as he was starting to go over might have saved him. He didn't touch his brakes, but didn't touch the throttle either - just trying to let it crawl at it's own pace. But, no doubt, throttle probably would have helped.

I photochopped one of the pics from above to show better how steep it was. I just rotated the original until the girl standing behind me looked fairly straight. Still doesn't seem to do it justice, that spot was really steep. But it does give a better idea.

My buddies Jeep went over when his front wheels were just about six inches further forward than mine are in that picture. You can see the hole his passenger rear went into, putting his driver rear way high in the air. My longer wheebase didn't put my passenger rear in that hole until my fronts had started out of their hole. If that makes sense...

In his case all that he might have needed to do was shift into the next gear. But that skinny pedal is your friend more than that lousy brake pedal :haha: We drop off ledges all the time and you really have to get in it so you don't go over forwards. I've been over backwards and that was fun, maybe this year I'll try an over forwards :haha: My over backwards I wasn't trying to do, it just happened.

Here is a clip of my buddy using the skinny pedal at the right time :2thumbs:
