What's this??? A canyon rumored to be as photogenic as the world famous Antelope? Is it possible? Is it even in the same class as Antelope?

Mid-winter is hardly the best time of year to get good canyon lighting for photographs but we could wait no longer to check it out so Marc Olivaries, Jason Summer, Jason Price, Keith ? and myself decided to explore the rumor and here is a little of what we uncovered.

Next problem.... what do we name this canyon? Some of the current suggestions....

Not Chambers
Little Middle Northeast Fork
Donkey Show
Morroco IX
Insensitive man
Midpoint
Middle Prong of the South Fork of the North Branch

That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

I think we had four camera's and a video recorder on the trip. We should have some sweet pictures and video from the collective group.

A little later in the year with the sun a little higher in the sky would have been a big help so we could get more light bouncing off the walls. It was pretty early in the morning when we entered the canyon and it was still really dark. Almost headlamp dark in a couple places.

A band of wild donkey's live at the head of the canyon. One even tried to jump in the Range Rover and go for a ride. Scared the snot out of me and I squealed like a little girl. :haha:

I like Insensitive man and Donkey Show, but why were those names chosen?

Because Insensitive is an adjective of Dead. It will make more sense later...

Becuase a band of wild donkey's live at the head of the canyon, one tried to ram us.... and this fit perfectly with a donkey story told around the campfire the night before.

I think it is one of the better photogenic canyons. A professional photographer would get a woodie in the slot. We were in the actual slot for 3 or 4 hours so its a long canyon with many opportunities.

Better then Antelope is very subjective.... that is how it was first presented to me so I ran with it. What can I say.... I'm just a pimp at heart. :haha:

Personally I think a lot of canyons are better then Antelope, one of which is nearly in your backyard.

I agree that Red Cave is better than Antelope. I was just sort of ---- kind of ----- getting around to wondering ----if this one was better than Red Cave.

Great pics!

You guys are out explorin' and finding beautiful new canyons and I am stuck here in Chicago freezin' my arse off.

I have got to get back out in the canyons. Thanks for the motivation.

same area, but it's not as long as you are thinking.
yes there's an upper and lower section.
the upper can be done as a hiker loop
the lower is technical.

we covered the sections that you are reffering.
but nothing was cairned.

great little canyon, very pretty, worth the drive.

Got it...

Apparently, there are two different canyons that boast Antelope-like narrows. The one you guys did, and the one I am going to do the second week in March. We'll have to compare photos when I get back.

Either way - sweet find. :2thumbs:

Yes, I'll post a route description. You would have to be a real jerk to post the teasers we just did and not provide more info. It usually takes a week or two to actually write up a route description, get the maps together, have my partners proof read it. Currently the biggest stumbling block on this one is what to call it. :ne_nau:

Yes, I think the route is better then Red Cave, Mostly because the actual slot is much longer, but the rock doesn't have that deep striking red color that Red Cave has. The slot does have the wonderful swirls similar to Red Cave and a fantastic corkscrew section similar to Antelope. The canyon is technical.

On Climb-Utah right? With the usual spot-on GPS waypoints? Looks like I may have to dust off the old Cannon A-1 and tripod for this one.

The canyon will NOT be called Donkey Show.... even if it is a great name :haha:

I'm pretty sure it will be named after one of two features noted on the USGS maps.

I'll post a link here to the beta when I get it up.

canon a1 rocks !

the "good old days", when a camera was a tool not a jewel. fully mechanical. no electronics or plastic inards to turn it into a door stop because of a little rain or dust. one of the reasons i still resist going fully digital.

Yes sir... I just cannot seem to part with the Cannon. I have used that camera for years and shot some might fine shots with it. But it is heavy however, in the right canyon, I would still carry it. This Donkey canyon or what ever it will be called just may be such a canyon. I would also likely take my little Pentax Optio in just to experiment and learn better how to use that thing along with the brick.

i have one of those camera pouch packs, a little triangle lookign thing w/ a mian compartment for camera and filters, and an outer pouch for additional lens or meter or whatever. hang it around the neck and strap it around the waist. carries well adn is right in front of me fro easy access, even w/ a pack on my back. i used to wander the wichita mountains of oklahoma w/ an old calumet monorail 4x5 mounted on my tripod, the whole blasted thing slung over a shoulder. THAT was heavy. i love 4x5, but for hiking they are bulky and high penalty points, aka drops or bangs or whatever. am lookign into a medium format right now. just can't give up the film... especially since the very best digital camera right now is only capable of nearly equaling medium format.

happy shooting.

Here's a shot I took with a medium format camera (Mamiya 645AF). I dragged it down White Roost canyon. This is by far one of the best canyon shots I have ever taken. I got it enlarged to poster size, and it looks breathtaking. You can see little pock marks in the rock, and sand grains clinging to the walls. Unbelieveable detail.

Awesome! Now I just have to remember my login...(moved computers and don't remember what it is). LOL

I must say, I approve of the name. That's what we named a canyon we did in Northern WY. :2thumbs: Although the WY counterpart isn't nearly as pretty as this one looks to be.

jumar

I haven't found many, but there's a few. The ones like Spur are limestone canyons, which was kind of fun after doing mostly sand stone slots.
Most probably aren't worth driving all the way up there for. But if one is in the area already (near Yellowstone), or doing some caving up there or something, then they're worth doing I think.

Got some pics of others in that area on the bottom of my canyoneering page.
