Got a trip planned for the last weekend of February (Feb 24th). So far, the plan is Lomatium in Arches, and Medieval Chamber, or possibly something within the vicinity of Fisher Towers.
I'm camping at the trailhead Friday Feb 23, and going through till Sunday.
Kazak has committed. Others are welcome. Marc? Kyrell? Sign up if you're interested.

i'm thinkin' that sat might work for me. but i cant commit at this point cause the wife is out of town for most of that week, so i'll need to run it by her.
i'd be interested in doing Lomation w/ a blimp hanger exit on sat.
most likely my wife will want to come too if i can make it work.
she loves the furnace, and the last time i went there without her i was shamed w/ heavy guilt... :nono:

Well, it's not hard to explain. Just a heavy set lady pushing her buggy through the grocery store. The mundane can be fun on an outdoor forum.

^^Update^^
I just got back from hiking around in the Fiery Furnace in Arches. I wanted to find the entrance to Lomatium before we do it on the 24th. The top secret directions I received were dead on!!! Thanks again to (classified) for doing the legwork on this. Looks like a fun trip coming up!
My friend Dan has also signed up. So far, the group is at three people.

You doing Lomation on Saturday (the 24th)? I might be willing to do a one day mad dash down to Moab and back since I've wanted to do that one for a while. I have a school clinical thing on Sunday, but that Saturday is one of my precious few days off this month.

Well come on down! The plan is Lomatium on Saturday the 24th, and then either Medieval Chamber or something else on Sunday. We made it from the Fiery Furnace parking area up to the drop-in to Lomatium in about 40 minutes, and the canyon itself doesn't look too long. We could probably be through it in under four hours easy.
Marc may or may not be coming along too. Group size is looking to be around 5-6 people right now (Me, Alex, Dan, Eric, Marc, Marc's wife).
rock, I drove to Fiery Furnace at 2:30pm, didn't see your truck :( The weather was too awesome then!

Do you still have room for one more?
itchys, I don't know who is all going from SLC, as far as I know, I am the only one. I can pick you up on the way if you want. I am planning on heading down Friday after work, spending the night in the motel6 and then meeting up with rock and the gang on Saturday morning and camping it on Saturday.

Just out of curiosity - is Lomatium in the park? Does the Park Service have any problem with canyoneering in the park?
I ask because there are lots of arches off the beaten path that I would like to visit but I don't know if I can just go off exploring on my own.

If Beta were available
Lomation is dry (or maybe ankle deep at one spot), takes about 1/2 day. The actual slot is only a couple hundred yards long. Both rappels are free hanging. The major difficulties are route finding and rigging the first rappel. The rappel is a real bitch to rig and not leave 80' of webbing or have difficult rope pulls.
The route is suitable for beginners with competent leadership. Small groups of 6 or less are advised (less impact and easier to fly under the NPS radar).
A map, compass and/or GPS are worthless for this route. After doing the route you will understand why

Sunday still looks good for Medieval Chamber.

Lomatium is inside the Park, and inside the Fiery Furnace, an environmentally sensitive area. The Park does not, per se, have an issue with canyoneering in the Park. But, a couple things you cannot do:
1. Climb (or canyoneer) on any named arch (on the USGS map).
2. Endanger other people, which means you cannot rappel above a highly used trail, where you might knock rocks down on the tourists.
3. trample crypto soil, or otherwise have adverse impacts.
they also discourage getting lost and needing rescue, which is one reason for the careful concern about people going into the FF - it is an easy place to get lost.

Newbie here with a strong back.
Hey Rock...I would love to join you guy's if you have room, I have done Medieval Chamber but not Lomatium.
Now as I understand it, the new guy has to prove himself to the group. So I purpose to carry all the rope both day's. And let it be known that I do enjoy a malt beverage after canyoneering, so there will be a limited selection for those who also partake.
What do you think?

Hmmmm...if you wanna go with us, you have to pass this canyoneering quiz:
1) Who is the Emperor?
2) Your anchor fails while you are on rappel. You are 95 feet from the canyon bottom, there is no wind, and it is a free-hanging rappel. What is your velocity when you strike the canyon bottom? (in feet/second)
3) How many slot canyons are featured on Climb-Utah.com?
4) If Jane tramples twice as much cryptobiotic soil as Susan, but not half as much as Jason, how much more cryptobiotic soil will she have to trample before the NPS closes public access to the Fiery Furnace?
5) What cheese goes best with apricot hefe-weizen?
This quiz must be completed in 20 minutes. I'm timing you.
Good luck!

2. I have no idea. But what I can give you is this:
After 1 second you would have fallen 16 feet
2 seconds=64 feet
3 seconds=144 feet
You will not reach terminal velocity (293 ft/sec or 200 mph) for 9.1 seconds or 1341 feet
3. Are you including Behunin? Shane techanically doesn't call it a slot canyon.
4. Very little. They are Ultra-sensitive.
5. Presidental Brie with a little smoked salmon

Yes, I am sick of the snow. Vail reported 39" new from 2/12-2/16. Incredible skiing/snowmobiling except the backcountry is so dangerous that you are limited to very specific aspects. We set off an avalance on Sunday in the Flattop's that nearly killed a skier. The silver lining: He was OK after a few tense minutes, and I got to use my beacon, shovel, and probe in real life scenerio.

What's the correct answer to #2 on the canyoneering Quiz?
It would depend on the person and what they are wearing. It also would depend on how the person falls. Let me give an example. A skydiver falling will accelerate to approximately to 120 mph with arms outstretched, but 200 mph if the arms are brough inward to the body. It depends on the fall. The junior high level equation of 32 feet per second squared has no bearing to reality in real world situations.
You would have to be pretty smart to figure it out.
Shane, I don't want to run you off by any means dude! I will split the cost of the motel for Saturday if you are staying. I will just bring my camping vehicle if it ends up to be like that, besides I have XM radio in it, so it will be funner to get down there.

Eric doesn't get off work until 7:30, so i'm thinkin' we'll just leave after we get him, besides, you know me, i'd rather sit by a fire and sip a highbrow beer.
so it sounds like you'll be down there before us, if Alex wants to camp, then find us a spot he can get to easily. there's some great primitive camping off of 313, about 4 miles passed the big switchback in the Bartlett Flats area. up against the mesa. lots of fire rings etc.
yeah you can ride home w/ me.

No, I was actually fairly impressed with your answer - it was spot on (give or take a few feet).
Scott P
02-22-2007, 02:25 PM
it was spot on (give or take a few feet).
Well, sort of. Just because the falling climber does not reach terminal velocity does not mean that there is no drag. Also spot on implies something more specific than anywhere between two and three seconds. (Sorry, I'm an engineer so am picky. No offence is meant to anyone :2thumbs: ).
Anyway, without drag the correct equation is as follows:
d=v[i]*t+1/2*a*t^2
-95.0 ft = (0 f/s)*(t) + 0.5*(-32.2 feet/s^2)*t^2
-95.0 ft= (0 ft) *(t) + (-16.1 ft/s^2)*t^2
-95.0 ft = (-16.1 ft/s^2)*t^2
(-95.0 ft)/(-16.1 ft/s^2) = t^2
5.90s^2 = t^2
t = 2.43 seconds
However, this is just a standard junior high school equation. It isn't accurate unless you are in a vacuum. Wind drag won't have too much effect on such a "small" fall, but it is enough to add many hundreths of a second, or perhaps even tenths of a second depending on the fall, clothes worn, etc. The above Junior high answer is inaccurate in real life situations.
At a minimum the following equation should be applied:
D = 1/2*Cd*r*v^2*a
Good luck finding Cd and A for an individual person. More trouble than it's worth. Better to just shove them off the cliff and forget about it.
Iceaxe
02-22-2007, 02:45 PM
Well, sort of. Just because the falling climber does not reach terminal velocity does not mean that there is no drag.
This reminds me of the difference between math and engineering.....
The mathematician: states that if you tie a string to the mailbox and keep shortening the distance by 1/2 you will never get to the mailbox.
The Engineers says: I don't really give a shit, because I'll get close enough to get my mail.
Or....
Scott says... yada,yada...
Shane says.... if I toss scott off the top of the cliff and use a stop watch to see how many seconds it takes for Scott to hit the ground I can tell you how high the cliff is within a couple of feet....
:cool2:
:lol8:
rockgremlin
02-22-2007, 03:03 PM
:lol8: Exactly. My comment "good to within a few feet" is good enough IMO because the drop is less than 100 feet. If we were talking about hundreds of feet, drag + the other variables mentioned would play a major factor.
Scott P
02-22-2007, 03:25 PM
Actually my only qualm was with the phase "spot on". I completely agree with the phrase "close enough" if that was the phrased used. There is a difference between the two. :nono:
if I toss scott off the top of the cliff and use a stop watch to see how many seconds it takes for Scott to hit the ground I can tell you how high the cliff is within a couple of feet
Hmmmm, some things to keep in mind.
1. I weight 230 now. Don't want to strain your arms or back too much, so be careful.
2. Since I weigh so much, it's going to leave a heck of a mess in the canyon and at the bottom of the drop. The logical thing to do would be to tie me up, but then leave a pull cord and then get the rest of the group down. That way you could get out of the way and then use the pull cord to pull me down. If you threw me off from the top, you would have a mess to wade through after reppeling the drop. The method above is actually the logical solution. :bootyshake:
PS, I'm just teasin' you all. It's only fair.

There is a band of darker clouds hovering directly over the La Sals, and the clouds seem to be moving due east. Immediately over Moab and farther west there is only scattered lighter-colored clouds.
Still sunny and partly cloudy here at the mine.
I'll keep this thread updated on the hour. So far, I aint scared. :2thumbs:

Slightly past 11:00 am...
Still partly cloudy and windy here at the mine.
Temperature is now 44 degrees.
The darker looking clouds over the La Sals has now expanded, and it appears like there may be some rain in Moab right now. I doubt that it is cold enough for that precip to turn to snow, since it's 44 degrees here, and its generally 10 degrees warmer in Moab.
Partly cloudy and tamer conditions to the south of here.
We could use the visuals as well Justin..... see what you can do about that. :five:

Breezy, and overcast. Temperature is now down to 32 degrees.
Snow accumulation is at 0.5 - 1.0 inch. Two of my co-workers made calls to their spouses at home recently (one in La Sal, one in Moab). Reports coming in from La Sal say that it is not snowing, and is partly cloudy. The report out of Moab 20 minutes ago said that it was raining.

I love Olympus. I had this wonderful 8mp camera and drowned it in Misery (only took a brief second!) so most of my photos on my site are taken with a 3mp Olympus which did great. I replaced the 8mp when I killed the smaller one in Mystery. I banged the camera on a rock and it won't open or close now. This big one is heavy and hard to haul through the canyons but it's worth it. I hear you are a big, strong guy so you can handle it. Smaller ones are handier in the canyons however.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/OlympusC8080WZ/Images/frontview-001.jpg
Mark, the great wet camera is Pentax Optio W10 camera. That's what Ben, Marc and I were shooting with. Though it's a great waterproof/dustproof camera, I am not happy with my pictures from the last trip. My pictures turned out pretty flat and some of them didn't pick up the color right. I'd still recommend the camera for the wet canyons or if the camera might be dropped in mud/sand.
Another camera I use is Canon S2 IS, it's a bigger camera, but still Point and Shoot and has a great 12x optical zoom, which is very useful in the outdoors. I am not as pro as Richard is at photography, but a lot of my pics turned out decent enough to show off here with. So those are the two recommendations I can give ya.
There are a lot of Point and Shoot (P&S) cameras out there, a lot of smaller ones, faster, etc. But keep in mind most of them are not weather proof and a single rain drop might ruin a camera. I have dropped one of my cameras into the Colorado river, it was in the water for just about a second, but it was enough to break it, luckily I was able to read the memory stick.
What I would recommend for a camera is:
-at least 3-4Megapixel, I personally think 5+ Megapixel is an overkill for P&S cameras.
-Big zoom! I never thought I'd use the zoom until I got my 12x. Also keep in mind Optical zoom is NOT the same thing as Digital Zoom, digital is worthless.
-Flash. Bigger is better of course.
-Movie mode. Make sure the movie mode can do 640x480 at 30fps, I wouldn't settle for smaller size. I use movie mode quite often with my kid and outdoor activities.
-Manual mode. I prefer to have a manual mode, but it's a personal preference. Richard can chime in with more detail on this.
Hope this helps.
Also, you might want to look at an Olympus waterproof camera:

I believe he has the WP30 (latest of the series) basically more Megapixels. But it's the same series. What I don't like about my WP10 camera is the size, it's just a bit too big for the P&S camera. I will look at the Olympus camera once the Costco comes out with it. But other than that I am totally happy with the Pentax camera for the waterproofness and the speed of operations.
Mark Schnupp
03-01-2007, 08:56 AM
Kazak, What are the differences between the Pentax and the new Olympus? You seem to have a good understanding of camera; I don't. Is it worth waiting for the new Olympus?
Since it's so close, I would wait and see. Olympus cameras are always good, they have great lenses and usually take decent pictures. Pentax used to be the leader in the waterproof cameras, but Olympus is breaking into the market now.
I will buy the Olympus as soon as I see it at the store and will let you know if it's worth it or not. I guess you want to stick with waterproof cameras?
utidcapaco
03-01-2007, 09:08 AM
I researched the Olympus (I believe 720SW) long and hard vs. The Pentax Optio (I don't have the W30, but I think it's the W10, like Kazak's). What I found was that while the Olympus had higher resolution, the actual photos weren't any better than those taken with the Pentax. The "shockproofness" of the Olympus is a nice feature, but the consensus I read was that the durability wasn't that great and that it wasn't worth the additional premium $ over the Pentax. Now that Pentax has increased their megapixels and doubled the depth of waterproofness, I would say it's a no brainer: go with the Pentax. I don't know if Olympus has updated their model, but if they have, YMMV. As for size, I don't have any problem with the Pentax. If it were smaller, I'd probably drop it easier. :haha:
uti, I believe the Olympus one has the lens cover?
I wish Pentax would bring the rubberized case from the old film cameras they used to do. :frustrated:

i've been pretty pleased w/ my Pentax optio ( i have the w20)
but like Alex said above. some times those point and shoots just dont grab enough light .
he and i actually had this same conversation while slogging through Lomatium. they are great small cameras, but not the end all be all for jaw dropping photos.
i've been shopping for my next camera, and i think it will be a Canon Rebel XTI w/ a 2.8 24-70 lens.
BUT i'm going into it w/ the mind set that its gonna get thrashed in the canyons, so WHEN it does, i wont be heart broken.
:haha:
