Senate Votes for Stadium!

UtahGamer

More to come! Rod Decker, KUTV bluster reporter, made it clear that our taxes were being spent. They mentioned that the Governor was pointing out that it was all from hotel taxes, but Decker pulled out the "fungible" word and described how that same money could have gone to the zoo or other worthy causes, so it is no different than sales taxes. Whatever. One thing for sure, if this was an election year, it would be a much tougher sell to the legislature. I have no idea if the House will be easier or harder, though I suspect with the Governor's push behind it, this will sail through. http://www.sltrib.com/ci_5169527

Honestly I hope it doesn't get approved because people who don't give a shit about soccer will be helping to fund the new stadium

Honestly I hope it doesn't get approved because people who don't give a shit about soccer will be helping to fund the new stadium(war, roads, poor, katrina releif, schools, national parks, environment, prisons)

I don't have kids.

I don't use roads on the west side.

And aparently, I don't understand economics, though in "real"ity, I don't think that the stadium will bring a whole ton of development. Real is a business, not a soccer team.

So, did it get approved or not?

I need to know how many bullets to load...

Saw it on the news last night the deal is done Huntsman was pushing pretty hard. They did mention that notably Peter was not in attendance at the announcement.

I guess I am in the minority. I am excited for this and I am glad a way was found to make it happen. Soccer is not my sport but for virtually every kid it is. I know, I was going to three and four games a day last fall with my four kids. Also, I am a believer that this will add to the community and I think for you head bangers, you will now have another concert venue. Looks to be a well planned and nice facility. I think the state will make up for their cost in tax revenue in short order. Remember the buzz when Real Madrid came? Big money for the state and international TV to boot. I plan to go to a few games with my kids.

Soccer is big for kids, but it doesn't translate into viable entertainment in adults. I've heard the arguement that professional sports franchises are good for a community. That's true, but the soccer league is barely above amateur league status. Hardly anyone cares about it. Making a public deal to keep the Jazz in town is one thing, but using public money to make a few people wealthier is ridiculous.

That is exactly how I feel.

No kidding. I'm with you. I do not know anyone how has been to a game or who has any interest in going. I really have a hard time believing that Real soccer is going to bring money to Utah. Especially when it is going to cost Utahans a bunch up front.

Part of the reason why the UofU stadium was added on to during the Olympics was for long term community improvements (like this sort of thing). If a soccer team can't stay there until they actually build up a following, who can?

BOO! What is our government doing with tax money? When do I get my share of the pie for a new building to house my business? :nono:

That's easy, because there is nothing like that in your area. They may see a small increase of spectators because it gives a person something else to do with their free time, but I don't think it will draw droves of people. Now a stadium that can offer a wide variety of amusement, that would be the ideal ticket. Just think, if the soccer things ends up like the titanic, this could very well end up some national baseball or football team looking for a new home

I wish SLC had an NFL team!! I don't think SLC/Utah would support a team however. People here don't seem to understand or enjoy the game.

I'd be behind an indoor soccer league. At least it's fast paced and fun to watch. But outdoor soccer sucks. Unless it's the U.S. Women's National Team. I'll watch those gals.

I think Utah has enough football fans but I think the problem is that too many Mormons (like myself) would not go to games on Sundays. If you don't have a crowd in the stadium, you don't get the team.

Of course I say that but the Grizzlies have not been as successful as people had hoped. I think another problem is that too many Mormons (like me) are cheap. Why pay 10 bucks to go to a soccer game when I can hike (or watch sports on TV) for free?
