Best of 2006 Canyoneering Pictures :2thumbs:

The rules.... only one picture per post and no more then 5 pictures from any one person. The pictures must have been taken in 2006. The pictures do not have to be yours, but proper photo credit must be given and you must have permission to post the photo if they are not yours. Anything larger then 800x600 will be deleted.

I'll start this baby off with one of my favorite 2006 shots. This is my hot young stripper wife and myself in Subway.

I'm going to guess we hit the Subway about noon or 1. It was late summer and the lighting was perfect in both the upper and lower sections of the Subway. The Upper Section lit up first, then about 30 minutes later the Lower Section. I have since had four of the pictures I took that day blown up and hung in my home.

Anyway, I like this one because a four and six year old are showing the adults how to do it with style.

hmmm .... well i can tell you what i did. the only thing i did with photoshop was use it to reduce and resize it. the image came out superdark, i think because the exposure setting on the camera (which i play around with alot) was TOO low (the richness of color comes out better when the exposure setting is set lower). so on iPhoto, i dramatically raised the "exposure" control to recover it. if you're talking about the reddish color of the rock and the reddish blue sky, that color is roughly as the original is. i noticed that my photos became redder when i put the camera on "landscape" setting, which i figured was the more appropriate setting for the outdoors. but on some photos it seems to come out too strong. i don't quite understand why this would be the case

but now as my camera is jacked, i need to get a new one anyhow ... sigh

Is this pic from the ill-fated trip? Do you have a pic of the snow covered moki exit by chance? If so, I'd like to see it.

I like the Imlay picture.... nice colors. Hard to take good pictures in that canyon because its so dark.

ok. yeah. i remember bumping into nat and another in sracenic, in '04-ish i think. we were taking a break to ooh & ah when they passed us. it was kinda funny as we then headed down canyon their tracks dissappeared. we thought they stemmed over a spot but it got too wide for that after some 10-20 feet, but still NO TRACKS :eek2: . we had some fun making up stories as to what they really were. angels to delay us from meeting some untimely freak accident doom ? aliens playin' w/ our head ? g-men keeping tabs on us ??? 1st did constrychnine w/ shane end of '05 (i think). teh others were '04-ish.

well, i know it was feb 05 that they were down there. he was with his friend jeff. they did slideanide and arscenic that trip, did they see you in slideanide? we then came back the following month to do the constrychnine/arscenic pair.

anyhow, shane posted on your constychnine saying it was 2/11/06 weekend.

as far as the alien angels, he told me they stemmed much of it trying to avoid all of the water. did you not see tracks after that?

constrychnine must have been 2.5 then. maybe i am trying to block that whole trip form my mind. shane seemed really jealous of my superior driving skills nad snappy cap :lol8: . i was embarassed for him.

i really have a horrible memory when it comes to when's and where's and what's. seem to have a hard time holding on to more than the emotional memories. specifics blur right out eventually... but i do remember they had wetsuits and had done or were going to do slideanide. we saw them in arscenic. was only 1 little pool then about knee deep and 5 or so feet long, maybe a little more.

that is a nice complex down there. even though i try pretty hard to stay out of something twice, arscenic and constrychnine are great canyons.

I don't know.... you read through some of the old accident reports and NPS Morning Reports and you will just shake your head in amazement at the stupidity of some folks.

The rangerette had no clue who we were..... we could easily have been the local boy scout troop equipped with no wet suits, a shared rappel device and no headlamp. How was the rangerette supposed to know that we were world renowned canyoneers. :haha:

The really funny part was one of the boys told the rangerette that "Tom Jones said it was OK".

She said "Oh, you know Tom? He taught me how to rappel. If Tom says it's OK I'll give you a permit".

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Yah, we hiked out in the dark on a new moon with only one flashlight for the 12 of us. I remember thinking how remarkably hiker friendly Negro Bill Canyon was when I actually did it in the day. A 3-hour hike with a sunrise start, I now carry a headlamp, sometimes two.

Thanks! You have some great shot there too.

Those photos I posted in this group were actually all taken with a little digital 3mp camera. I have got much much much better now and have a great 8pm camera to drag through the canyons again! I am excited to redo all my albums. The trick I have learned recently is to set your AEL button on the sky, open the flash and shoot. That seems to give the best balance of lighting in the canyons for me and I no longer have the washed out tops.

Imlay Gear is good stuff.... it was just funny the first thought through my head when I saw that picture was Tom should use it in his catalog.... I mean, if he actually had a catalog.

nice shots, montanablur, that one of frank olivares is action-shot like, frank supercrystal-sharp against the very unfocused/blurred background.

i am sure the blur of the background enhances our perception of the sharpness and clarity of the foreground, but it just looks incredibly sharp.

good stuff :2thumbs:

welcome back, btw! hope you'll be posting more often
