Ok, if somebody can fall off of a bridge easily, maybe you could put up a barrier, however (IMO), I believe that is only transfers the suicide to somewhere else, and the GGB Authority can just say that they are suicide free, meanwhile the guy sucks on his car exhaust instead. If some dude wants to take a swannie, then maybe that is his right. My point...that is on the top of my head, glad you asked!

San Francisco mulls Golden Gate barriers as suicides rise Thu Jan 18, 7:16 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Suicide barriers could be installed at San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge after a surge in the number of people leaping to their deaths from the iconic landmark, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation Authority said officials were looking at the effects barriers may have on the wind dynamics of the bridge.

"There is an ongoing two-year study investigating the wind dynamics using modelling in wind tunnels," Mary Currie told AFP. "That is our number one challenge, then we can address the aesthetic and historical concerns."

The San Francisco Chronicle citing coroners figures reported Thursday that at least 34 people leapt from the art deco suspension bridge last year, a spike from an average annual rate of 19 deaths.

Police also stopped another 70 people from jumping.

Local county coroners expect the official count will increase due to "unidentified bodies whose cause of death is consistent with a bridge jump," the paper reported.

A 16-year-old boy was the most recent bridge suicide.

More than 10 million tourists visit the Golden Gate Bridge annually, but the landmark also has the distinction of being the world's number one suicide destination. 1970 marked the peak in suicides with 40 reported deaths.

The past year's spike comes on the heels of the release of a controversial documentary entitled "The Bridge" which chronicled the stories of a handful of 2004 suicide jumpers.

Since the bridge was built in 1937, at least 1,250 people have jumped to their deaths according to local coroners.

And where they jumped from....

Interesting that most folks jump into the bay (east) and not out to sea (west).

Looks like "69" is the most popular light pole to jump from. :getiton:

There has been quite a few people who survived it, and some who even swam to shore unaided! Those dudes have a story to tell!
