so in breaking the utah-centric mold for a moment, where else have you visited or frequented that you found just as spectacular as teh greatest state on earth - aka utah ?

when i lived in oklahoma i frequented the wichita mountains quite a bit, as well as teh arkansas ozarks. both beautiful palces. the vast majority of time i wander sans camera, but here are a few shots for those others who love to look at pictures. that is why i liek this site so much, well layed out and full of visuals. (although, to be honest, some of the visuals are entirely overdressed :naughty: )

the northcoast of california ... traveled there many times, even lived there for a bit. the largest tracts of old growth redwoods are up there, adjacent to a spectacular coast with wild beaches, cliffs and seastacks.

one of my very favorite places on earth. one special trail to me is damnation creek which leads down 1000 vertical feet to a secluded beach with rocky cliffs. even has a free standing rock sea arch which regularly gets crashed with waves and burried by tides.

here are two virtual 3-dimensional views of what the redwood forest is like on these trails. these pages open up in quicktime and, with your cursor, you can rotate the image about as if you are turning your body.

Another vote here for the Oregon coast! :2thumbs:

I have also visited Black Sand Beach in Hawaii, and the coastlines of Ecuador (San Vicente, Ballanita, and Salinas), some of the most gorgeous beaches I've ever seen! :2thumbs:

Where's Scott these days? He's bound to talk a blue streak about all of the cool non-Utah places he's been.

love those shots of the west coast. have visited teh pacific nw before and those beaches are nice. not the the tar and jellyfish infested gulf coast from my youth. craggy and rocky and tide pools full of starfish and mussels and anemones and such.

Some of my favourite areas from my own backyard:

The Squamish-Cheakamus divide, with the Tantalus range in the background. Taken from Brandywine Mountain:

The Chilliwack Valley has some beautiful mountains, including the Canadian and American Border Peaks (the 49th parallel crosses between the two peaks on the left) and Mount Larrabee:

Upper Joffre Lake, an hour or so north of Whistler, and a 3 hour hike in. Gorgeous lake at the foot of the Matier Glacier. (Not the best picture quality - old scans from old photos.) I carried the 3 year old up 3/4 of the way, he hiked the rest. I had to carry the digger:

Here's a few places. Sorry for the small pics, that's the size they are in my yahoo albums apparently.

There are Yosmite, Virgin Islands, The Alps (Swiss) and Alaska Inside Passage. I dont have any photos easily accessible of the interior, unfortunately. Sorry about the tiny size, that's how they went into my yahoo photos and I just copied them from there.

It was mid July, last year.

btw, don't pump your own gas in Oregon. You could get fined.

The first time I went was for three weeks. We flew in all our backpacking and camping stuff and rented a vehicle, then drove all over, stopping in places to either backpack (Denali) or camp. We went to a really amazing place called McCarthy (in the Wrangels area), Did the Yukon Highway, Hiked Exit Glacier (way awesome), went to the arcitc circle, etc.

The second time, we did the inside passage. We took the working ferry through and slept on deck. We went to Gustavus to sea kayak, flew to SKagway to hike and did the train there for kicks (beautiful), and generally hung out along the way.

McCarthy is a pretty wild place. did you drive that road in there. crazy road as i understand it, superbumpy with nails. most folks who drive it carry two tires, or so the legend goes. due to major car problems outside of glenallen [engine dropped out of a VW vanagon when we hit a 1.5' deep pothole in the dirt road highway(under major construction) completely filled with water from the 8" of rain that fell the night before. ended up giving the vehicle to someone on the road crew who was trippin' on something.] we ended up flying in as we were gonna fly into the depths of the park anyhow.

how was the weather on the trip? the deck is the best place to be fo' sho'. it did kinda amaze me that at 5am, some folks didn't mind getting up and start talking at normal volume :haha: what a special area ... it's a real shame we're more interested in logging the tongass instead of righteously preserving it.

went to the arcitc circle, etc.

nice! i opted for hiking along a (mildly) high ridge 50 miles south of the circle, on which the sun doesn't set for 7 days around the solstice. it had the added benefit of being decently breezy and we didn't deal with mosquitos for almost 3 whole days (weeehoo). but when we returned to my car, i had the scariest mosquito swarming experience. completely covered in them crawling all over my body (and friend's) beyond just swarming around me ... my white car was a dark grey, they swarmed it too. from what i hear the more north you go in alaska and the yukon, the worse it gets.

true story: a my aunt's x-boyfriend (and friend of mine) is a wildlife biologist for the feds up in alaska. currently he tracks birds and animals with collars, but for a long time he did a lot of bird watching in the field, often for months at a time on the north slope of the brooks/arctic plain. anyway, one trip a bird watching buddy of his from the amazon came to do a 2 week trip with him. first week was in the highlands of the brooks, the second week was in the lowlands. during the first week the friend says "i don't know what you all complain about up here about the mosquitos ... this isn't bad at all." my friend says "uhh ...shhh... don't say that ... next week, could be bad." they continued hiking down into the lowlands. they wore full head/arms/torso head nets and didn't take them off outside at all for a week. it was so bad that they couldn't eat in any reasonable way without taking in a serious mouthload of mosquitos. in fact, despite the serious (lowland) bear country and going against the rule, they ate in their tent, as it was the only way.

his friend conceded that he "would take the amazon ANYDAY over this."

i laughed :lol8:

okay since we're talking about alaska, alaska has just too many cool places, in many ways it's all cool. one of my favorites of all the places i have been is the prince william sound. this photo was taken on a long kayaking trip i was on

college fjord, prince william sound, alaska august 1997

One of the nicest things about retirement is the time to go wherever you want. My wife and I have been doing that for the past 13 years or so, visiting every state and most Canadian provinces, not to mention a few other countries. Unfortunately, my photos before 2001 are all in print form and packed away in a storage unit. Some of the ones since 2001 are on-line at
www.pbase.com/sparker1, organized by state. Other than Utah, my favorite states are CO, OR, WA, AK, AZ, ID and MT. That doesn't mention favorite places in Canada, of which there are many.
