The Pirate Bay, one of the world's most popular websites for the illegal downloading of films through filesharing, has said it wanted to buy its own island in a bid to avoid copyright laws.

so, these guys want to buy an island, ideally "Sealand" (which just came up for sale), to avoid copyright laws. Great idea.

But... what about the rest of us? Wouldn't we still fall under the good ol' US laws, even if we shared files with this "independent" island?

So it would seem, only the lucky few who would be on this island would be file sharing, legally. They would still have to find "suckers" in the rest of the copywritten world to get their files from.

If the company has it's own "country" there would be no laws about piracy and forcing the company to share it's information from it's tracker (tracker being the device that indicates who has downloaded what). With the world court now a days, I guess I'm not quite sure how international copy right laws would work in that case.

I'll tell you one thing though, I can totally picture "big business" invading that island and taking it over.

If they become an independent country they would be open to the same methods the world currently uses to enforce it's will on rogue countries..... meaning economic sanctions, trade embargos, yada, yada.... heck... we could simply toss up a navel blockade using nothing but a small gun boat. Sealand is really just a pile of junk with no means of self support, no fresh water, no power, you get the idea.

As a country we have few problems about invading others when it effects our economy.... just look at any of the wars over oil for proof. Anyone really think we would have a problem invading a small island if it began to effect this countries intellectual properties? Or just ram it with an old barge and then say "oops, sorry about that :haha: "

I say this is nothing but a great publicity stunt..... wish I had thought of it. Gosh.... these guys will become incredibly rich just from the money some idiots will send in to support the idea..... now I'm off to kick myself in the ass for not thinking of this simple idea to become rich.

And just for the record..... Cocaine boss Carlos Lehder tried a similar tactic with Norman's Cay. Norman's Cay is a small island that sits 210 miles off the coast of Florida and served as the headquarters for Lehder's drug-smuggling operation from 1978 to around 1982. As part of the Medell
