Keep in mind I am a newby and will be traveling with other newbys; while a serious hike is fine we are looking for nothing nothing technical.
I was hoping to hike the Ding and Dang loop or Wild Horse Canyon this Saturday (13 Jan) but it looks like there will be snow Friday and maybe Saturday.
Should I be thinking about alternatives? Any recommendations?

Also, leaving Utah Valley early Saturday morning and returning Sunday afternoon. There is still one empty seat if someone wants to hitch along...

Little Wild Horse should be no problem. I've done it in snow with my kids and it was not a problem.

You might find water in Dang.... or not.... or maybe you can stem over the top of it all. Normally if Ding is dry Dang can have anywhere from zero to some water.... yeah I know.... not great help but at least some.

Crack Canyon is close by and fun. it should be doable this time of year.

You could also consider Horseshoe Canyon and Moonshine Wash. I've done both of those in snow with no problems.

Hurst Arch is a great winter day hike for experianced hikers.

If looking to kill an hour or two add Wild Horse Window.

What are you driving? The road to Horseshoe can be a bitch this time of year...

I'd love to see Little Wild Horse under fresh snow, Goblin valley under a dusting is amazing. :D

Depends; one guy is still on the fence. If he goes he wants to drive his new pick up truck. I dont remember the brand or anything, but it is a 4 door cab so there is plenty of room for 4 passengers.
If he does not go we will be driving my cousin's Suzuki Sidekick. He seems pretty confident his sidekick will make the trip, but I will be taking some notes and my Steve Allen guidebook in case we need to pick an alternate.
Either way, there is still an empty seat if you want to come along Joe...

Isn't that the way it always is? There's always a straggler, and somehow they play a major part in the trip, so you never know what's going on until 30 minutes prior.

None of the roads should be a problem with 4 wheel drive unless they are really wet. These roads are all normally drivable in a passenger car.

But as Joe warned I have seen them really bad before. I always carry a shovel and common sense when driving the backcountry roads of the Swell and Roost. It's a long walk out if you get stuck.

I never posted a trip report; I was embarrassed. The trip did not happen, everyone backed out but one guy and he had a Sunday morning commitment. It didn

We plan to camp somewhere near Ding & Dang trailhead, do the D&D loop Saturday and then either Little Wild Horse, Chute or Crack canyon on Sunday morning (recommendations/advice?).
It looks like we will have one empty seat or if anyone wants to meet us down there you are welcome to join us. Drop me a PM.

There is great primitive camping in lower Chute wash just off the dirt road before LWH and D&D trailheads. PM me if you need better directions than that.

I suggest doing Little Wild Horse/Bell first. Then Crack from the top (out and back). Then if those were no problem then do Ding and Dang. Most the guys here think D&D is a cake walk. But if you canyoneering exp is limited I would use caution. Dang can hold lots of water that can be stemmed. But if someone can't stem it you don't want to go in it this time of year. It would be damn cold.

Another way to gage it is if you go up Ding and encounter little or no water, chances are Dang won't be too bad. But if right off the bat you are forced to get your feet wet, then Dang will be really wet. Skills wise if your group goes up Dang no problem than you Dang won't be to bad.

Take lots of pictures,

James
