I just ran into this as I was searching through the FF extension/add-ons.

This is an extension called UnPlug. Link here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2254/

UnPlug is an extension which lets you save video and audio which is embedded on a webpage - it's a video download tool!

Pretty cool stuff! We are no longer slaves to the websites containing the flash media. I love to download, so I'm not depending on internet speed.

OK, now all I need is for somebody to show me how to do it!

I installed the plugin then closed all firefox windows. Then I went to youtube.com and picked a video. I right clicked the web page and selected Unplug, you have the option to save the imbeded file here. default file name was get_video.flv
Plays fine in VLC

This is pretty cool, thanks for posting it.

I opened this file in VLC and works fine.

Maybe VLC is my issue. What exactly is it? I gather it's a media player of some sort.

Mmm, VLC rocks - it's all I use for video, plays about anything I throw at it. For downloading video, I've been using the "Fast Video Download" FF plugin for a while now, and have had no problems with it. Happily sits beside Greasemonkey, quiet in the corner until I need it.
