I'm looking for some good gear shops that one would pass by on their way from Vegas to Bryce Canyon. On my September trip I will need to pick up a stove and some fuel en route. All I could find was a REI in Reno and that is out of our way.

It seems the hassle of getting a backpacking stove onto a plane is more trouble than its worth. I guess this is a good excuse to buy a new one.

There is an REI in Henderson, NV, which is about 20-30 miles out of Vegas.

Las Vegas REI (http://yp.yahoo.com/py/ypMap.py?Pyt=Typ&tuid=28813381&ck=3121845083&tab=B2C&city=Las+Vegas&state=NV&uzip=89101&country=us&msa=4120&cs=4&ed=r7sV3K1o2TzkIG5X.itDLKSvI5wdYjFQ67Rt_HbkgyyDqw--&stat=:pos:0:regular:regT:2:fbT:0)

There is a Big 5 and Acadmey Sports in St. George, UT.

Then there's always Sombeech's favorite place

They often have lightweight stoves but I didn't see 'em online.

Outdoor Outlet in St. George, UT is your best bet. It's just west of I-15. Take the St. George Blvd exit and go west over the freeway. After crossing the freeway take your first left (1000 East). Go south for one block to Tabernacle St. and turn left again. Look for "Outdoor Outlet" and "Dixie Gun and Fish" painted on the building. The entrance is down the hill and around back. Bo Beck, a memeber of this forum, is the manager of the store. You'll find what you want there.

There's also The Mountain Shop in Cedar City. I've never been in there, but I know where it is. Take the first Cedar City exit (going north). It's a short way off the freeway on the right (east) side of the street. Word on the street is that the owner was either going to sell the business or close up shop so don't count on the store being there.

I there's an REI in Henderson now. It's a suburb of Las Vegas. If they're anything like the REI in Missoula, MT don't count on the employees knowing anything important. I had to help a fellow customer in their (Missoula REI) climbing department summer before last.

Outdoors Outlet - wish I'd known about it in September, when I was last out that way. I learned about it from Tanya, here, and now I can't wait 'til February to check it out on my next trip through St. George. Just got their Holiday 2006 flyer - wish I had a budget left to spend...

In September, we stopped in Henderson's REI, and picked up a couple of things. Didn't have any questions for them, so can't comment on staff. Pretty out of the way, though.

In May I flew from Seattle to SLC via Boise (Alaska and Delta), and took a MSR Dragonfly stove with me. Gave it a good clean. Also took a fuel bottle, washed out with soap, and well rinsed. Bought white gas at REI in Sandy. At the end of the trip, I left the remaining fuel with neighboring campers, and just air dried the stove and bottle. If they wanted to hassle me on the return, I would deal with it at the time. But, no, there were no problems either way. YMMV. Not sure if the Holy $#!t, Are We In Danger level was at Taupe, Ecru, Ivory, or what at the time.

Wow, good URL fix, moderator.
