Has anyone else seen the new Discovery Channel show "Man vs. Wild"? I'm watching the one right now where he is in the Moab desert. He went into a slot canyon and was swimming in a pool when he came to a log jam and recommended swimming under it....is it just me or does that seem nuts ? I guess its possible.
I am watching it too! Went in a canyon without a rope at that! I would not have swam under it unless there was no choice what-so-ever!

It might come on again later tonight?
I thought I was going to fall in the Colorado once on a hike in the Grand Canyon. We were hiking on that narrow ledge which seemed far too close to the river! I was SCARED!!!! This guy in the show had a pretty mellow section of the Colorado to cross.

I have just started watching that show. I have the Moab episode and the Canadian Rockies (I think it must have been the pilot). I don't know if you guys have ever watched "Survivorman" but "Man vs. Wild" is SO much better. I'm loving this show! I can't wait for more.
P.S. Could you believe when he urinated on his shirt? It was smart to do it, but bold to broadcast it.

I hear urine has all kinds of uses in the wild. What would you guys use it for it you had to?

Some people say you can drink your own urine but I hear that is counter productive. The urine turban was a good idea, and I'd do that. Your clothes are a lot stronger when they are wet, so I'd also urinate on any clothing with which I might support myself. Urine has a lot of nitrogen and it is acidic, so I would probably use it for cleaning out any cuts too. I guess I'm not sure when I would need to use it to survive, but I'd be willing to try most anything.

there are many cases in point where people have drunk their urine and consequently have survived longer. this is not to say that it can't have negative effects ... but most would probably agree that the negative consequences are minimal compared with death.

Although I thought he did some wild and cool stuff I thought that the show lacked in "smart" survival techniques. For instance, I don't think that hiking down a slot canyon (even in pursuit of some ultimate river) is really going to increase your chances of survival. The same could be said with chimney climbing for 50 or so feet or swimming the Colorado. I don't think the show portrays common sense survival techniques as much as it portrays extreme survival techniques or survival with an attitude. In other words it wasn't good enough to just survive, but you had to survive AND get an adrenaline rush. That could be a dangerous combination.

My hiking partner, Bo, taught survival for the military and after much debate after the Ralston thing we decided it is counter productive. That does not mean its right, its just what we decided. I have heard its good for cuts or cactus --- if I remember right?

Yeah.... I think it was like a death wish! Did you notice that river was only a few inches deep? And that was not quicksand -- right? As he called it? That was just some deep mud? Not to mention.... wandering around in 120 degree heat instead of hiking when its cooler.... swimming under that log jam... chasing rattlesnake for dinner.... climbing for an egg.... eat it raw (although some are into that)... I did like his egg cooking.

:nono: Just because a guy has the knowledge and capability to do a thing a certain way doesnt mean it's smart to do - wilderness survival means you use your head and try not to PUT yourself in a situation like that. I am sure I am not the only one who has had years of survival training and knows when not to go there

The dude's an idiot and anybody who views his antics as educational is an idiot too. This show is for pure entertainment. He takes unnecessary risks and overestimates others. I saw the Canadian Rockies episode. He was afraid that this grizzly bear was stalking him. BS. The griz was watching him thinking "Even if this joker manages to kill himself he's to skinny to eat." Then they guy did this slide thing down a steep slope to outwit the bear. The bear would've just ambled down the slope, sniffed his carcas, and left. Our guy then jumped into the water to throw the bear off his scent. Good move idiot. Now your clothes are wet and the bear will just sniff along the opposite bank to find the trail again. Hope you've got a sat phone and an extraction team.
I watch the show purely for the Mystery Science Theater aspect. "Now I'm going to ascend this bit of p-cord using my shoe laces as a prussic just so I can boost my ratings...." This show is going to get him killed, or worse, sued. At least there's somebody to fill the vacuum Steve Irwin's death left.

Most of my training stems from working with the BSA for 30 years- don't laugh - when done right, wilderness survival will save your life. For years it's the only way I knew how to camp :ne_nau: - until I tried to take my wife camping years ago and discovered that not everyone liked to go camping with just a sleeping bag and a knife :2thumbs: that's when I bought a tent & didnt make her sleep in a lean two ever again :haha: My firstaid comes from there too as well as mine rescue/ first responder stuff.
...Even a pro needs to keep up on things so every year I try to keep up on this sort of thing. :2thumbs:

The last 5 years or longer that I've taken boys to scout camp I've show up with a tarp ,some rope , a sleeping bag ( at least that's all the boys see) and set up a lean too...scouts and leaders alike think I'm nuts until the day after the first good rain and they are drying out their bedding and my stuff never gets wet...or muddy :ne_nau: I have taught orienteering classes for years and years ...I guess I just know basic common sense outdoor survival techniques. .. and I can cook a mean dutch oven!

I watched this Man vs Wild in Moab show last night. Pretty dang funny. :roflol:
First off, anyone recognize any of the canyons? I think one of them might have been Fry but its been a long time since I was last in Fry. Maybe Fry and the Black Hole???
No way was this all one long trek as portrayed in the show.
No way am I going to pee on my head cover and then wrap it around my face. I'd rather die.
Don't mess with Rattlesnakes. :nono:
Don't jump from cliff's. :nono:
This show should be titled..... "What is the dumbass going to do next?"
Anyhoo..... the show is worth watching just for the laughs and nice scenery. :lol8:

How you you like the advise of jumping into a slot canyon to find water? They need a woman along on these treks! What good show does not have a woman along!

Has anyone been in a canyon with that much water and just have it dead end? Seemed kind of strange to me.
I agree with Shane - entertainment only and the show will continue until he breaks his leg or neck.

Tell us the story please!
If I remember correctly this is the story.
Heaps Devil Pit
http://canyoneeringusa.com/history/heaps82.htm
Short version is one of the first documented descents reported that Heaps ended at a massive dryfall (upfall?) that had to be climbed.
Heaps contains dozens of long hallways (my term) that end in a sharp left turn. Sometimes the hallways extend beyond the sharp turn. Current theory is the vintage canyoneers missed a turn in the canyon because of fatigue, the late hour, poor lighting, yada, yada....
Here is a second story

here is another story by a party who tried to determine what the devils pit was.
http://www.canyoneeringusa.com/history/heaps91.htm
if i remember correctly too, nat descended it and found something that was very similar to the devils pit. but then they back tracked and found the that the canyon descended in a different driection ... this being a dead end and was seemingly directed in the down canyon direction.
