well hell, not be be outdone by the likes of Tanya... here's a few more :haha:
i love this area in the winter time.
having a 4wheel drive makes navigating the slimy roads during this time a big plus! the approach hike is also easy enough to the drag the little ones along, on this trip my little boy was 3.5 and my little girl was about a year.:2thumbs:

I was thinking of trying to land a walk-in permit for Coyote Buttes North (aka The Wave) in mid-December. Anybody here have an idea about my chances for success?

I have had no problem in the winter. My guess is 99% if you are there by 8:30 am.

Thanks. What about same day? I see in the winter you get the walk-in permit in Kanab, only M-F. We were going to be coming down Saturday, hoping to do The Wave on Monday. Do you think we'd be able to get the permit Monday morning?

Less likely, but possible. I went to Kanab and got one same day during December last year.

Want a hike thats far better than the Wave and you need no permits?
Check this one out... It has the formations of the Wave and so much more. Can't do this one after it snows heavy though.

At the start of the hike is Water Canyon

Then you get to the Wave like hoodoos and slick rock on Cannan Mountain

Tanya, Canaan Mtn looks better all the time. Moving up the list of things to do. Is it a decent out and back for an old guy like me?

You are not old! You are just right. :2thumbs:
You can go up and do a day hike and go as far as you want. Most go to the Windlass and then back. Hardcore crazy people can hike from Hilldale (Water Canyon ) to (Eagle Crags) Rockville. If you do the Eagle Crags exit do it in a least a 2 day backpack, however carrying a heavy pack on this hike is a killer... so pack light! Its cold up there at the camp site at 7000' feet though! On a scale of 1 to 10. This hike is a 10 plus! I give the Wave about a 4. Wait for the new trail report though before you head up. It should be up today or tomorrow and whatever you do.. take a good map!

Tanya,
Thanks for the recommendation on that alternate to The Wave. I'll give it some thought, though our range is somewhat limited by carrying a 13 month old...

You would not want to do the hike then... its too steep to carry and child and the child would not want to walk. :ne_nau:
