I Hate SPAM

Any suggestions for limiting the amount of Spam you receive? I get over 100 Spam message every day and I'm getting tired of it. My current though is to just run all my email through Yahoo and let their Spam filters eliminate most of it. Only problem is I would need to update to their premium service ($20) because I often get large emails and I want to access my email through a POP account.

At one time I tried running my mail through a commericial company called Mail Rover or something like that.... They were a joke an a total waste of money.

Any other thoughts or suggestions? Recommendations?

I would get a new email account, i know this may not be an option. I have 4 email accounts at yahoo and they always fill up with garbage.
You can create an email account on yahoo and let it just sit... it will fill up with spam on its own.

Gmail has far less spam, my current account is two years old and i have had 5 or 6 peices of spam.

I have several Yahoo! email accounts, and they are the least Spam-ridden inboxes I've seen. Under Spam Protection, choose this option...

I dont like the fact that it could delete something that I may need, and it eventully will.

Yeah, Yahoo is problematic for deleting needed mail. My team at work recently built a new email blaster (mass mailer) and we have had all kind of trouble with Yahoo. Their servers are pretty tricky. We send out about 250,000 emails at a time and our results really sway when a good percentage of them are going to Yahoo address. Still working on it with our whitelisting company. Spam sucks!!! :frustrated:

Changing addresses is not a option, I have over a dozen different addresses I use for different things. My big problem is I have to use an email address on my website so folks can contact me. The spammers use bots to farm websites and generate spam lists. I deleted 289 spam messages this morning from my account. I guess is what I really need is a service where folks must verify their address or to run the emails through an account that has good spam filters. My Yahoo accounts actually receive very little spam, which is one reason I considered running all my incoming email through a Yahoo address. If Yahoo would strip even 50% of the spam out I would consider the $20 a year fee money well spent.

At one time I used a program called Spam Assault with good results, but that program is no longer very effective for some reason. I'm guessing the spammers have learned to ignore the bounce from Spam Assault or something.

I'm still looking for helpful suggestions.

as far as putting an email address on your website, you should instead make an image that gives the email address, but cannot be read by a computer. doesn't work against humans, naturally.

The image doesn't work against computers, the computer just reads the email address linked to the image. There are a few backside server tricks I could use.... but.... I really need my email address to be easily accessible to the public.

I think I need a good way to filter or block to accomplish my goals.

okay, well i don't know much about spam filtering..

what do you think about the following idea?

you could set up a spam filter for this account and filter out every email which DOES NOT have a certain word in the subject line. then on the climb-utah site you can instruct new folks to include such a word in the subject like (VIAGRA :haha: nooo like CEDAR or something)

then once they've emailed you, you can add their address to the spam filter to allow them to email (unless they use another address) without the word.

just a naive idea.

One of my problems is about 75% of the people I interact with are what I would call computer illiterate. Putting up any type of hurdle or obstacle for them is not what I consider a good idea. I've tried writing my own filters, but the spammers but that in itself is a full time job. I guess I'm looking to pay someone to do this for me to free up more of my time.

some tips to avoid spam:

Don't have a simple email username. For instance anything that would have ONLY your first name@______.com. You'll find most large corporations use the first initial and last name, or first name(.)last name, seperated with a dot. This is so their hundreds of employees can avoid spam.

Spammers will plug a list of thousands of first names, possibly with a last initial also, and put them @ any domain. This is a good portion of how spammers get to you. They can access a database with all of the first names ever known, send them out, and then start adding 1 initial to those first names. Many emails are invalid, but they'll use a program to generate the email so it's not time consuming.

Also, common sense. NEVER sign up to win that JetSki at the mall. HUGE spamming campaign. I used to do a few of these things with my first email address. Nothing but spam now, and it's Yahoo mail.

My main Yahoo mail is on my profile. I've had it for @6 years, and I receive NO SPAM at all. In fact, I can't remember EVER receiving mail for something I don't remember signing up for. It's because I don't have a simple username.
