I snapped this last night. The clouds looked pretty crazy, this pic does not do it much justice.

Anyone else have some great Utah sunset pics?

Some great shots of Utah Sunsets and some other places ,too. Sometime I've got to find and scan a film picture my wife took in the Virgin Islands.

Here are couple of mine. I really like the Rainbows with the hills lit up. And it was from my deck.

okay i wanna join the fun!!!

sorry, forgive me if this is not utah ... but there are joshua trees in utahr

i spent a some time visiting joshua tree during 94-96 (94 was when it was converted from monument
to park status). my first time there was in spring 1994, treated to the most enormous full moon,
wild lightning and wind storm while camped on the side of a short peak (hmm), then en route to the car,
had a couple of inches of silver dollar size flakes dropping down on us as we walked amidst the joshua trees.

the story the park tells is that there were two names used for these trees:
(1) one viewed the trees as pirates with the leaves as knives/blades (i forget the specific name) and
(2) mormon pioneers considered the limbs of the Joshua trees to resemble the upstretched arms of joshua
leading them to the promised land.

anyway ... this following photo has been one of my favorite sunset photos. i just recently got the negative scanned ...

waltny that is a cool shot, what are the settings on that pic?

waltny
08-07-2007, 10:09 PM
Alex, what I will say is that with these shots the apature-shutter relationship became crystal clear. As I played in manual mode and messed with the stops(my lousy P&S only goes 2.8-8.0) and hanging the shutter I was able to get the camera to see close to what I was seeing(Im at the mercy of the camera for exposure compension when I do this). I would say I was at F5.6, 1/180 ISO 80 to get both of these. With that in mind, I took about 50 shots that night and these are the best 2....

Alex
08-08-2007, 05:19 AM
1/25 isn't too bad of a ratio :lol8: Mine usually turn out 1/100 if not worse.

waltny
08-08-2007, 04:58 PM
You should be getting a better ratio than that with the D40, we should get together for a shoot some day.....

Anyhow here is one shot from just above the capital building in SLC last night. I missed the downward slanting rays by about 10 secs as I was setting up my tripod.... Not sure if this is the best, but :ne_nau: if its not.

I took that with my D80 using the 18-200mm VR lens at 150mm zoom. It was a challenge just to hold the camera steady enough to keep it reasonably sharp. I really wish I had brought a tripod...

I really like the shots you've submitted by the way...great work!

thanks for posting. looking good.

summit, is that a vert pano/HDR? If so, I've got to ask-does your camera have auto-bracketing and if so, are you using it? Or are you manually changing exposure for the HDR shots to create several HDR's that you then stitch together?

I'm loving the effects you're getting.

This one a is just a vertical HDR image ... no stitching at all.

I've got to ask-does your camera have auto-bracketing and if so, are you using it?

Yip, if I recall correctly this was shot at -3, -1, +1 (1/3, 1/18, 1.3sec) @ F18

Or are you manually changing exposure for the HDR shots to create several HDR's that you then stitch together?

By stitching are you referring to HDRs in general or verto/panoramas?

By stitching are you referring to HDRs in general or verto/panoramas?

I'm loving the effects you're getting.

Thanks! I have been shooting more and more every week. You should check out my flickr stream I post a few photos up there every day.. trying to boost my numbers on Explore :naughty:

"A shot from the spot" - All were taken standing in the same spot, a pile of gravel in my back yard, at different times of the year. I've captured hundreds of views of the magnificent Kanab desert and like the true photo geek that I am, have them all in chronological order by year, month, day and time of day. Oh boy - I must be special.

Well, many beautiful pictures shown above.
I hope mine still add a little bit extra beauty.
Checking my pictures of Utah I ended up with these 2.

The first one was taken at Canyonlands, Island in the sky , 2010/11/16.
(not that it matters a lot where this one was taken, since it could have been taken on many places.)

The second one I took at Arches, returning from the Broken Arch loop, 2010/11/17.

Grtz to all!
