I'm shopping for a truck. 6 cyl, 4 door, automatic.

Can you tell me where I can go for some good comparisons between different manufacturers? I'm looking for a site that will give me side-by-side comparisons.

For instance:
Toyota Tacoma vs Nissan Frontier
Dodge Dakota vs Ford Ranger

Thanks.

I am a subscriber of Car and Driver. Their site is good too.

FWIW, I owned a 2001 Frontier Crew Cab non-supercharged 4x4. It was the slowest, most gutless, gas-guzzling thing I've owned. Not to mention the smallest most cramped thing too.

Dodge Dakota is biggest and most powerful.

I know I'm not a paid opinion giver, but just can't stand to see a fellow exJeeper fall victim to the Frontier.

Now the Titan.................they're onto something!!!

Abby and I would really like to get her a Frontier sometime after my car is paid off. Starting in 2005 they got bigger and got a bigger engine. Test driving it sold us on it - we really liked it. Another big factor that might steer us in another direction is that we'd really like a flexible-fuel vehicle, and right now only large pick-ups are so equipped, like the Titan.

True, the newer ones are bigger and more powerful, but you'll pay for it. I opted for an 04 F150 SuperCrew and paid less than a new Taco or Frontier AND got tons more room, more power and about the same gas mileage.

I like me Ford. :2thumbs:

Thanks bro. :cool2:

I would go fullsize 8 cyl +, but I don't have anything that I need to pull besides my dad's small boat. And gas prices make me want to stick with 6 cyl.

...unless there are 8 cyl engines out there that get just as good gas mileage.

My main purpose is to take 4-5 guys on road trips, with all the gear/bikes in the back. It's just nice to have everybody in one vehicle.

K...everyone knows that I am a Toyota hore. Have a look at the Tundras. Sure you pay more upfront. But you'll never open the hood after you first have a look when you buy it. And yup they have them with the V-6. My Toyota pickup has been paid off for 5 years and its alllll gravy baby.

Kelley Blue Book's site is what I'm looking for. You can compare up to 4 vehicles at one time. It will list ALL specs.

My friend Gina loves her Tundra. It's a smaller truck, but there's plenty of room in the back seat :feelgood: . Okay, I just had to make the joke before anybody else did. On a trip last winter we sat three guys in the back seat for about three hours. I'm 6'1, 200# and I never felt cramped. There's enough room for my legs, shoulders, and head back there. Not much room to stretch out, but it's the back seat of a pickup for cryin' out loud. The bed is a tad short with the 4 door option, but it has a 2" receiver hitch so towing a small trailer (or even a big trailer) would be easy. It seems like a quality truck with plenty of power for most things.

I'm a Chevy Silverado man myself. Extended cab, regular bed. It still has 4 doors, even though they aren't all "real" doors. I like the 6'-7" long (regular) bed even though it won't fit a full sheet of plywood with the tailgate up. The 5'-8" short bed (standard with the crew cab) is too short for motorcycles and/or all the other crap I end up taking with me on road trips. My buddy has a '94 Silverado that has the road to Moab memorized. It's a great truck and always gets us there and back. Even with the 350 engine (5.7L) it gets right around 20 mpg unless it's towing a trailer and then it gets 10. That's as good or better than most V-6's, and the new(er) 5.3L is even more efficient. I think you'll find that a V-8 Dakota will get at least that good of mileage and usually better too. And who knows, maybe you'll "need" a bigger boat soon.

An other reason I'm a fan of the Silverado is because of the bench seat. Having that extra passenger spot can make all the difference. Your sweetie can't lay her head on your lap with a stinking console in the way, and the console just gets filled with junk anyway..

Also, I've been around enough Ford Rangers to know that what they lack in size and power they more that compensate for in ability to suck gas. YMMV

Consumer Reports is best. The thing about Car and Driver, Motor Trend, etc is that they always make just about every vehicle sound good and don't say much bad things about any of them.

Not true with Consumer Reports. They will find problems and inconveniences with every vehicle, as well as the good points (if any).
