A downside to wearing helmets besides the messed up hair?
Apparently, motorists will give cyclists MORE room if they do NOT wear a helmet. A study was done involving 2,500 passing cars, and they gave less room for bikers who wore helmets.
In fact, the researcher was struck TWICE while wearing a helmet by motorists.

To conduct his experiment, Walker rode a bicycle fitted with a computer and an ultrasonic distance sensor and recorded data from more than 2,500 overtaking motorists.
He spent half his time wearing a helmet and half bare-headed. He says he was struck by a bus and a truck while wearing the helmet but was uninjured.
Funny, the researcher's name is Walker, as he's studying cyclists and motorists.
